PS4 Best SSD for price?

Scrumpt

So I've just got this really old PS4 OG model (not slim or pro). I fixed it up but the hard drive is old and bad and also broken. I'm looking to get a new 2tb SSD for it since I'm probably gonna download games onto it, the PS4 is limited to SATA 2 so I don't want to spend a lotta money on a 2tb SSD but I don't wanna buy some cheap crappy junk that'll be worse than a HDD. Any good suggestions, I'm hoping to spend less than $150 if possible.

Generally, any SSD could be good, as any SSD will probably be faster than HDD,

Storage: TEAMGROUP T-Force Vulcan Z 2 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($110.99 @ Newegg)

sounds like a pretty decent SSD, perhaps even too good, but this one feels better than a more expensive Crucial MX500,

hmmm,

@Hinjima @Dedayog any of you guys have knowledge when it comes to SSDs in this situation?

The PS4 won't take advantage of modern ssds, so really any sata ssd is more than enough.

yeah when you compare it to the Crucial MX500 on the pcpartpicker stats, it doesn't have any speeds below 100MB/s

@Somerandomtechyboi you might know, but I didn't quote you before because you weren't active during that time

11 hours ago i was halfway into my sleep so about 7 hours in and only woke up 6 hours later at abit under 12:00 (slept at 23:00 ish) so yea your guess was correct =)

as for the ssd i dont really look at sata ssds, just look for a dram one thats decently fast and be done with it, if the dram ssds are overpriced get the cheapest thing available which is what i did and got a kyo 512gb for 20$ cause no nvme support on x58 and works like a charm, now lives in my thinkpad x230 cause im lazy to install windows again and hdds suck for anything that isnt a barebones windows 7 install =p

I figured TG was good, because the manufacturer is SK Hynix: https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/teamgroup-t-force-vulcan-z-2-tb.d1146

and it has better stats than more expensive SSD with dram

Best overall value, Crucial MX500. I have them in two PS4s. They've been great. Solid build quality and reliability, plus they have DRAM caches. Priced decently at $135 on Newegg and Amazon.

Best in class, Samsung 870 Evo. I have a couple in different applications. Fantastic drives. They're like an even better MX500. Overkill for the application and a bit expensive though. Priced at $150 on Newegg and Amazon.

Best cheaper drive, Team Group T-Force Vulcan Z. These lack a DRAM cache which is the main reason why they're cheaper. I only have experience with the older DRAM equipped Vulcan drives, but the Vulcan Z still seems like a decent drive for the application. Priced at $111 on Newegg, out of stock on Amazon.

I just bought a PS4 Pro 1TB model a few days ago and i really have to say the loading times are something to behold (in a bad way) coming from an SSD-only PC. Does changing the storage drive to SSD really significantly change the loading times on a PS4? I know on PC it makes a big difference but I don't know if there are other bottlenecks on a PS4.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

It makes a slightly bigger difference on a Pro since they have SATA 3, but still not that big of a difference. It really depends on the game. When I tested it about 6 years ago, the best improvement I saw was a 10 second reduction in the time to load a save for Ni No Kuni II on a PS4 Pro with a 1TB Crucial MX500 (from 44 seconds down to 34). Amazingly, an original PS4 with a 500GB Samsung 850 Evo only took 2 seconds longer than the Pro (36 seconds). Some other games, I barely saw an improvement.

One thing I remember reading about was that for some games the real advantage of the SSD was improvements in texture pop-in. I never tested that myself though.

WIth that context I'll have to think about it some more. SSDs have become cheap, but a 2TB will still set me back over $100...
