New portable : questions about SSD

Hello,

 

I’m here today because I’ve just buy my first PC in 12 years. Ive chosen a portable Gigabyte G5 KF.

 

I’ve decided to upgrade the RAM to 32gb (from 16) and add a SSD to the computer, but I have some questions regarding the SSD itself.

 

Right now, this is the specs for the portable for the storage :

 

Storage

Gen4 512GB

M.2 2280 x 2 (PCIe Gen3x4*1 , PCIe Gen4x4*1 )

 

In the portable there is already a 512gb PCIe4 ssd. My first choice was a WD Black SN7700 1TB m2. Afterward i was afraid of the heat since it’s a PCIe4 SSD, even if it’s in a PCIe3 port. So I’ve check for this one instead : Team Group MP33 M.2 2280 2TB PCIe 3.0 x4 with NVMe 1.3 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) TM8FP6002T0C101.

 

What is the best to do ? I don’t have thermal pad and just want to have a SSD that will do the job without thermo throttle or having to add thermal pad, since it’s completely foreign to me.

 

Could you give me yours suggestions about what I should do ?

I would just stick with a gen3 ssd, putting a gen for in gen 3 compatible slot won't provide any benefits. I would stick the larger capacity drive in there and call it a day.

Just because SSD is gen 3, doesn't mean that it’s cool.

newer pcie 4.0 controllers are usually made in newer lithography ( usually 12nm TSMC nowadays ), newer NAND is denser, and consumes less power per capacity.

 

I tested PNY CS3140 and Samsung pm991 in the same external case, and CS3140 was cooler buy more then 10 degrees, under load. 
 

and why even bother with temps? What you need is SSD that don’t thermal throttle. 

Do you have any good heat dissipation heatsink, or mass, for M.2 in that laptop?

I’m not sure to understand, what do you mean by mass for the m.2 ? Right now, the ssd included with the laptop have a little square of thermo pad to shield i think the motherboard for around 2 or 3 cm maybe ? After that there is nothing. Nothing else is available with the computer and my newer SSD doesn’t come with anything.

 

For the heat dissipation of the laptop, here is a screenshot of a video showing where the M.2 are going and what the inside look like. What you see is the laptop when you receive it and the finger point to the PCIe3 SSD port.

It looks like there is no any kind of thermal solution there, just empty space.

Exact, there is nothing there but the CMOS battery. The SSD that came with the computer have a thermal pad to cover the stick from the connection on the motherboard to the empty space, so a few centimetres. I suppose just to protect it. I’ve add another picture that show the SSD in the hands of the guy and the thermal pad is visible.
 

What do you suggest is the best approach?

It’s bad, as no cooling.

if you have some thermopad, you could try to connect it to the plastic ( it will give you like 5 degrees, and Wery hot spot on the bottom of the laptop ( as plastic isn’t great at thermal transfer )

 

how far is it, from the top of m.2 to the plastic? 
 

for SSD, I would buy something good, and just run it at PCIe 3.0 ( it will significantly lower the temperature under load ) 

 

were are you, can I use pcpartpicker.com to find some SSD. 
You want 1TB, what’s the budget?

I don’t have any thermo pad. I did search on Amazon, Newegg and google, but wasn’t able to find something i was confident in (and even then, i have no idea of the thickness needed). I’m not sure how far from the board the SSD is right now, because I don’t have the computer yet, it’s still in the mail ^^. I did buy the two SSD i talk about in my first post (2TB PCIe3 Team Group and the 1TB PCIe4 Black SN7700). I started with the 1TB but read that the heat on them was pretty high, so bought the pcie3 2TB one, and that’s when I realized I needed to have some help about it because i clearly don’t know what I’m doing. 
 

Can’t the back cover help a little with heat dissipation ? (I think the back cover should have some metal in it for that)

 

Regarding the space between the SSD and motherboard, here is another image that show it somewhat.

Thanks ! What software should I use to verify the temperature of the SSD ? I’ve heard of Crystal Disk, will that be ok ? 
 

For the SSD, which one do you suggest I use and do you have the impression he might get hot ?

Sn770 should be faster then MP33

Crystaldiskinfo Is ok ( you just have to refresh it, if you are testing, under load, as default is in minutes )

 

if you have Aida, or hw info you can use them.

I will follow your suggestion and use the fastest 1TB ssd in my computer and check the thermal of it from time to time. What should be normal values for the temperature and when should I worry ?
