HDMI 2.1 or DP 1.4 for 4090 and 4K 240 Hz OLED?

Display port is generally the way to go. Try both ports and see what each one shows as the frame rate limit and color depth.

Hi, everyone!

I just ordered an Alienware AW3225QF (4K 240 Hz) monitor for a new build that's running a 4090. Which cable would you suggest using? I know both will need to use DSC to drive 4K at 240 Hz.

While the 48 Gbps bandwidth of HDMI 2.1 is higher than the 32.4 Gbps of DP 1.4, will I notice a difference, and which would you recommend seeing as they're both using DSC?

My gut feeling is DP 1.4, but if there's any benefit of HDMI 2.1 I'll use that. It makes no difference to me.

Thanks in advance!

Why not just get a DP2.0/2.1 instead of a cable that 'just fits' your present needs? I don't have a 4K 240Hz monitor, yet I use DP/2.01/2.1 cables for my monitors. Just like my PSUs, I've always gotten PSUs that are OP'ed, like a 1500W Enermax for my 2nd rig, a 1000W Plat PSU for my main rig (where 850W would suffice).

Because its pretty pointless as these monitors COME with the cables you need. DP 2.0/2.1 cables arent useful on a 4090.  Also this monitor doesnt have DP 2.1 either, so far only the Gigabyte one does, that one will probably come with it 🙂 Dont need to spend money you dont have to.

It honestly sounds like you just like wasting money to just say you have it rather then what you need o.o If it makes you happy then so be it.

Neither the monitor or the 4090 support DP 2.0/2.1, so that's not an option unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply. As you said in the other reply, the monitor comes with both, so I could try them. Regarding colour depth, is this something I'd check in the display options in Windows?

So you're paying a premium for something you don't need today, when it'll be cheaper or even come for free with the device when it'll be useful.

Look, OP had not mentioned that his monitor comes with the cable, if he did, then yeah, use it. Besides, DP2.0/2.1 cables aren't that much more than DP1.4 cables....

Again, IF it were me, I don't mind throwing a few bucks to a good quality cables just so when I upgrade my GPU and/or monitor, the cable would be far better suited. But hey, IF you can afford an RTX 4090 + 4K/240Hz monitor but wanna scrimp on cables, that's fine with me  as it means less than nothing to me.

Nvidia control panel, Change resolution, should be right under refresh rate and resolution just have to scroll down.
