Hi, I'm new here on the forum. I have what seems to be a rather unique situation. I am building a PC (first build) that needs to be capable of running CAD software, I know that I need either a AMD FirePro or an NVIDIA Quadro for that. However, I want to use the same machine to run graphically demanding games such as Star Citizen, for which I'd need a good consumer grade GPU. My question is: Is it even possible to set up a system like this and be able to tell it which card to use and when? If so, how? Thanks for the help, this one has me really confused!

780-780ti they are beasts for both of them. And Quadros are overpriced

I think brandon (or was it edzel's) has both a Quadro and a GTX 780 on the same system (the workstation linus built for him on the video). however he is only using the GTX 780 for the Cuda capabilities, and the quadro for the 10bit color depth. I have no clue what type of software configuration allows him to do this.

My guess would be to plug your video cables into the consumer GPU since you'll need it directly for games and then in AutoCAD see if you can select which GPU it uses

CPU AMD FX 8350 @5GHz. Motherboard Asus Crosshair V Formula Z. RAM 8GB G.Skill Sniper. GPU Reference Sapphire Radeon R9 290X. Case Fractal Design Define XL R2. Storage Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD and 120GB Kingston HyperX 3K. PSU XFX 850BEFX Pro 850W 80+ Gold. Cooler XSPC RayStorm

I'm pretty sure you can run any combination of graphics cards in your system and tell it what to use and when. even cross-brand gpus should work fine, but don't expect them to work together: it's one at a time. in cad, when you go in the options menu there should be an option to choose your graphics processor from the list of those installed. on a sidenote, two gpus can also be used like this: if you have a new amd gpu and you want physx, and you still own an older nvidia gpu, you can have the nvidia card render physx and your amd card do everything else.

They might be, but there is some software that will only allow GPU acceleration if you are using a FirePro or Quadro.

That is because of drivers. A quadro is basically a geforce card with an opengl-oriented driver that can only be run by cards with quadro firmware. They are overpriced for what they actually are, but programs in need of opengl acceleration will run much better on a quadro than they would on a geforce. And with some quadros you get twice as much ram as the geforce they come from, so at least that's a pro...

im not sure but there is some kind of a way with a radeon card and a quadro. but idk if there is a way with geforce, since drivers may not work together. also if you work in cad and need cuda but not 10bit colour, a GTX card will be better for the price, but if you need 10bit colour, then you need a quadro.
