Radio with CD player and audio output in 2024

venomtail

Family member is looking for a way to play their CD's. Old radio had its digital panle die out. Works but can't see anything that's playing so everything's guesswork. Annoying. PS2 is starting to give out as CD's stop halfway through songs, incosistently. Living room already has a sound bar, pretty sure it's the sony HT-ZF9 that I can connect the radio/cd to via audio jack. Needs to look pretyy as well.

Struggling to find anything that doesn't cost too much. So far only this one but £300 is a joke. Amazon has a lot of "ugly pieces of shit" when I showed the options and anything that might remotely look nice doesn't have audio out, only self contained radio and CD players.

Anyone have any suggestions? There's gotta be something good that is 99% of what I linked for £100 at most.

I don’t think the type of device you’re looking for exists anymore.

Combination radio and cd player with powered output. I mean you can get that in some cheap mini Hifi setups:

IMG_1541.thumb.jpeg.f675a1a630fa38a55a44b29a4a7c5920.jpeg

but you won’t find something like this without speakers, and these are complete garbage in every regard

I think you should just look for used micro systems like these, older ones from when they were actually good, especially because the UK got tons of those

Youd be able to find something that fits that need a lot easier. Nobody really makes that kind of standalone component now.

Yeah, unfortunately if you want good hi-fi equipment, you have to shop used. You may not get all the modern creature comforts, but generally you can get yesterday's high end components for the same cost as new mediocre-at-best stuff.

At least they're not into cassettes; the last good tape mech was made in the mid-90s. The new ones are all the same cheap junk inside.

I ran into a similar issue, if I'm getting you correctly, you want something to play CD's that will give a display.

I attempted to do this with a disabled family member of mine who has a hefty settlement from becoming disabled so price wasn't a concern.  I wanted to give him a way to play CD's and rip them as well.  He is legally blind though so you might have a better chance.

Though this didn't work for me, perhap's you can rip all of their CD's and put up some kind of NAS running plex and a roku or similar media box hooked to the TV.  This way you have the display of the TV working for you and no need to run physical CD's.  I don't know if this helps at all but it was my effort

Maybe Philips M4205 at 140 pounds ?   Only negative I see is there's no audio out to connect the sound bar to it, but the speakers may be decent enough to stand on their own.

Philips M4205/12 Micro Hi-Fi Music System with Bluetooth | 60W RMS | CD, MP3-CD, USB, FM | Bass-Reflex Loudspeakers | USB Port for Charging: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

There's also a Philips M4505 at 165 pounds, it only adds DAB+ to the feature set : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-Audio-12-Bass-Reflex-Loudspeakers/dp/B08GCVXTLD/

Try a hobby/ vintage electronics shop, they tend to get donated CD players all the time, have a read around radio/ CD player forums for certain internals you want to find. As a bonus it helps out the charities hobby shops are often partnered with

Found this so far, pretty fugly. Also this but not sure of audio out. This might be a winner? I might have a look at simply standart old school radios. Someone's gotta still make them and 99% should have audio out as well.

Had those bookmarked but will likely have to go off since I could neither find a line out.

I already proposed buying used but no budge. Needs to be new and shiny, nobody's old stuff is gonna go in their house.

New question.

Now that these all come with 2nd speakers and we wouldn't want to waste them, can they be in any way be repourposed for rear channels for the Sony soundbar?

Then they need to up their budget or buy ewaste. Because the two options then become new consumer tier big name Hifi components or buying cheap Chinese garbage in the form of modern micro Hifis.

Onkyo is still out there making cd players and receivers with integrated radios, good ones, but even on the low end you’re looking at $300 usd for a cd player. And at least $200 for their most basic combination receiver.

Maybe you can find a DVD or Blu-Ray player with front panel controls and a small LED screen? Unfortunately, what they're demanding doesn't really exist anymore.

I've had the idea that maybe I should try and convince to just buy a DVD/CD/BluRay player and forego the radio requirement. Many stations these days have their equivalent radio TV channels as well as stream through the internet.

Might also be a great excuse to see some 4k movies at that. Any solid BluRay recommendations? Many on Amazon for like £30-£80 but the ones that are 4k confirmer are solid £200+. What would be the difference. Any have upscalers for old DVD's like I was told new Xbox has?
