Plex server nas help

Go to solution Solved by Drvulcanlord,

It really depends on your use case, I am just streaming to one tv. You could probably use an old office pc as long as it had a decent cpu and an enough amount of ram. For extra performance pick up some old NVIDIA Quadro or something if you encounter  performance issues. This website talks about the specs plex recommends, it should help.

Ok, so from the videos on the channel about plex servers, I can tell that I only need a computer with a decent enough encoder in the gpu or the court to handle good encoding to run a plex server. Plus as a nas, a computer doesn’t really require much computing power. Would I be be able to build a plex server that can support 3 people streaming different 4K content with just an i3 13100, using the onboard encoder or should I stick an old nvidia card in there to to do encoding work, ps which is the oldest nvidia card with working nvenc? Also from what I understand I need to pay for plex, so how easy is it to use jellyfin instead?

Edit: btw, how do I plex/jellyfin on truenas? @RONOTHAN##? I ain’t gonna pay for unraid

Imagine everything i have written in a Linus Voice/ linus tone (Spock live long and prosper gif here ,idk why tho, i guess i just want to say that i like star trek and am waiting for new seasons of the ongoing shows), But seriously, a lot of what i type only makes sense when said in a Linus tone from an older ltt video (circa 2017-2019 & now 2024-onwards) basically before he got a beard and a lot of it should make sense even in a Linus with a beard face.

also note as per the latest typing test on my laptop, my accuracy is 69%

I'm not weird/creepy, I'm just observant I have ADHD and am not on any meds for it because I don't want to and don't need to be on meds. i also may just be depressed. If you find other things around you depressing, are you depressed or are you surrounded by depressing things?

The Intel encoder should be able to do that just fine. If that's an option, just use that.

If you do want to go this route, I'd get something Pascal or newer. Quadro P400s are really cheap on eBay and can support quite a few streams (I think it's 3 by default, unlimited if you use an unlock script).

If they are playing 4k, they shouldn't be transcoding.... and if you don't need to transcode, you need almost no CPU power at all. That i3 will be massive overkill to just direct play plex media 🙂

Even in my own house, I will have to stream it over internet as I have to isp’s and their not linked to the same lan. If I could do that, that would be quite helpful though

My plex server is just a vista era office pc, but I have found that having a good network card is important as well as fast storage. Don’t know if this helps but that’s what I know.

My Main rig: i7-4790, Asus z97c, Radeon HD 7850 (2gig), Fractal Design Focus G.

My Laptop: Dell Latitude e5410, Tiny 11, 8gb ram, i5-450m 120 gig SSD.

Beware Yankees I'm a Louisianan  *Rebel Yell*

Installing plex on true nas is easy, there are many good tutorials  on YouTube but the gist is that plex is a plugin you can install in truenas’s gui which ich you then give access to a pool and setup your folder structure for organizing your content in. I run my plex server of true nas and the process was fairly simple once you get going.  I haven’t tried jelly fin so I can’t tell you about that. Hope this helps.

So like , a crappy old desktop with Trunas and a bunch of storage will work well both as a NAS and as a Plex sever ?
