I am new to PC building. Am I doing it right?

Go to solution Solved by RONOTHAN##,

First off, use PCPartPicker for making the lists, it's much easier for us to read and edit, plus it will go through and give basic compatibility checks to make sure you're not putting together things that won't work (it's not perfect, but it's a good first check).

Quickly looking through that list, there are a few things that I noticed:

  1. The RAM will not work with the CPU. 6000MT/s is always going to be DDR5, and DDR5 does not work on Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. You'd either need to swap the RAM out for a kit of DDR4 (something like 3200 CL16) or upgrade the CPU and motherboard to a DDR5 compatible version.
  2. I question the need for a HDD here. Not many people need more than 2TB, and if you do, you can always add the HDD in later.
  3. The PSU probably isn't great, and I'd want a higher wattage unit for that GPU anyway.

It's probably a good idea to read through the post guide for the New Builds and Planning section of the forum and rewrite your post in that format, it just makes it easier for us all around and would help fill in any missing info.

I am very new to PC Building, my friends introduced me to it and I love it a lot already, without even buying anything. That's because i'm afraid i'm doing somethinng wrong, like too little psu, great components but due to limitation by bad components there's no effect, too many/few coolers. Etc.

I will use my PC to get the best possible performance at gaming and in general, from FPS to storage to using multiple applications at once.

Here's a list of what i'm planning to buy (I do not have a budget limit but I don't need the best of the best of everything, I think.)
SSD: 2TB (What else should I think about when buying a SSD? Is 2TB enough? I'll download many shooters and racing games.)
HDD: 8TB | 5400 RPM
RAM: 2x 16GB | 6000 Mhz
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G | 6-core
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT | Boost freq: 2430Mhz | Normal (?) freq: 2124Mhz
Motherboard: MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus (What do I tell about this?)
PSU: EVGA 600 GD | 80+ GOLD 600w
Coolers: EK AIO 280mm | D-RGB (Water cooling) 2x
PC Case: Magniumgear NEO Qube 2 (Simple but efficient and sleek)

Let me know if there's anything I forgot, should remove, add, etc.

I get that you don't want to read all of this, so even if you check just 4 components, or for example tell me if my PSU is alright, you have my thanks!

What @RONOTHAN## said.

Also, re-check if that PC case actually comes with fans, becuase it doesn't seem so to me.
If it doesn't come with fans, you will want to buy at least 1 or 2 fans for exhaust

If at all possible go ryzen 7000. It's on a new platform so you have great cpu-upgrade possiblities down the road without changing motherboard and ram. And it's faster ofcourse.

Watercooler is overkill for that cpu, I'd rather go air cooling for a first build.

For Ryzen 5000 you need DDR4 ram indeed, DDR5 will not fit.

I'd also skip the HDD unless you have a specific use case for it like storing a lot of video files. Otherwise stick to SDD. 2 TB is great for gaming, and you expand when you feel like you need more.

Watch gaming benchmarks for your components on youtube to see if they fit your expectations.. And look into the monitor, resolution and refresh rate are important factors.

This is not a guarantee, btw. History has shown us that both Intel and AMD are willing to drop a chipset at the drop of a hat for arbitrary reasons

AMD 3600x, 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL14, GTX 1080, and Ungodly Amounts of Storage

Rumors are at least 9000 will be supported. No guarantee ofcourse but for 5000 you know there will be no upgrade path. And they did support AM4 for a really long time.

I prefer water cooling over fan cooling, is just 2 280mm water coolers enough or do I need fans too?

Watercooling requires just as many fans as air cooling

Also - watercooling is fairly inefficient and louder during idle tasks, air cooling almost always wins. Are you sure that's what you want?

I see it indeed has the same amount/more fans if I do water cooling, but with this case I want, the only downside was that it's not very compatible with air fans. Though I know I shouldn't trust everything that's on the internet, most people say water cooling is quiet and it's generally just "cooler" in my opinion

What county are located, what is your budget, what will be the primary uses of your PC, and what is your monitor resolution?

Right now I'm located in the Netherlands, I will use my PC for high end performance in high end games, for example Spiderman 2 or games like Far cry 6, Need for speed Heat, GTAV(I?).

I currently have a monitor which is "just" HD, and I am thinking about buying one of the Samsung Odyssey monitor series.

By budget is up to €2000, excluding other stuff like desk and chair. My current mouse, keyboard and mouse are fine and I know how I would upgrade them, even though I will never need to.

Your AIO needs fans to cool itself, and it comes with the fans for itself.

If you set your AIO as intake, the hot air inside PC will need to be exhausted as well.

If you set the AIO as exhaust, it will need fresh air so its fans can cool the liquid inside the radiator better.

Because AIO is only for your CPU, other parts like GPU also rely on airflow to cool itself.

And with that CPU n GPU combo, your GPU will need much more airflow (cooling) than your CPU.

I didn't include a video card for the fact Nvidia is due to release three more gpu's next month including the RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB which looks to be an ideal card for gaming at 1440P.

The 120mm fan goes inside the back of that case for a rear exhaust fan.

Thanks a lot, you (all) are very very helpful and I will look what suits me, as I now know what's within my budget and what I need. I suppose my question is answered, much sooner than I expected

I'll most likely post my PC Build here when I have decided what I want!
