So my Corsair CS 650 M 80+ Gold Modular PSU just started making a loud grinding noise, it started very suddenly and could be heard all the way through the house, it sounded like a 50cc scooter or something, I still cringe just thinking about it.

Anyway, I wasn't willing to RMA and spend weeks without my main rig, so I whipped out a screwdriver and pulled out a "Ong Hua"- yateloon-lookalike. The bearing sounds like what dragging a cruiseship over tarmac must sound like, I'm astonished the fan was even able to spin at all. Luckily I still had a real yateloon lying around and a few minutes of soldering later, my PSU was ready for action again.

The PSU is barely 3 months old and had been operating behind a dustfilter 100% of the time, which makes me wonder: why do I pay premium for a premium quality PSU, yet still I get a $4 fan to cool it? I'd happily pay a few bucks more to get at least a decent fan that won't start shaking the house down after 3 months of use.

All the high-quality japanese caps and 80+-whatever certifications don't help the user if the cheap fan craps out on him just 3 months in. I think manufacturers should be balancing the quality/cost of components inside their systems and not spending tons on one part and then cutting corners elsewhere.

-rant over- ;)

Corsair's cheaper PSU product lines are made from cheaper manufacturers, not Seasonic. You should get the AX series for top quality, because those are the ones made by Seasonic, which makes most of the best PSUs on the planet :)

NEW PC build: Blank Heaven   minimalist white and black PC     Old S340 build log "White Heaven"        The "LIGHTCANON" flashlight build log        Project AntiRoll (prototype)        Custom speaker project

Spoiler

Ryzen 3950X | AMD Vega Frontier Edition | ASUS X570 Pro WS | Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB | NZXT H500 | Seasonic Prime Fanless TX-700 | Custom loop | Coolermaster SK630 White | Logitech MX Master 2S | Samsung 980 Pro 1TB + 970 Pro 512GB | Samsung 58" 4k TV | Scarlett 2i4 | 2x AT2020

yeah, well I was on a budget and the AX line is EXPENSIVE... but you're right, next time I guess I'll be spending a little more on the PSU.
