Can my 4070 handle 4k?

Hakdog

Hi, I bought this awesome 34" monitor but I was getting annoyed of the black bars whenever I am playing especially with Persona 5. Its awesome with other games but I mostly play persona 5 so it's kind of bugging me and now planning to return it. I had a 32" before but it is only 1080p, from what I read and see 4k is a must for 32"? Can my gpu handle that or should I go for 27" 1440p? I really like a big screen to play with hoping I can stay 32" but if I don't have a choice I can go with 27" Can anyone help me? If it can handle can anyone recommend me a monitor for it please.  My budget is 350$ USD that's how much I got the 34" it was on discount but if I need to go to 400-500 I can but hopefully under that. My specs are here if you need it https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CXRfn6

Thank you in advance!

Totally depends on the game, but it's not like you have to play in 4K all of the time.

I can change the resolution to 1440p and it will not look bad? Like everyone said it's not good so I am wondering if it will be alright. I mostly play persona 5, bg3 and valorant.

Persona 5 is a 6 year old game, RTX 4070 is barely a year old high-mid-range GPU that's still relevant and expensive,

I think it'll handle 4K well

depends on the stretch, lower resolutions on big screens can look bad regardless how expensive the monitor is, but 1440p can be allright,

Valorant might be capable to run at 4K smoothly, but check your fps to be sure it's not tanking too much performance

Persona 5 will probably be good, BG3 maybe not, and Valorant depends on how much framerate you want (some people go to 240 or 360 on those competitive games).

I am alright with 240 fps for Valorant, thank you for the info!

google says both 32-34" is good size for 4K monitors, but smaller screen can potentially "look" smoother (don't take my word, I don't have 4K monitor)

Okay thank you for the info! I will keep that in mind. If I don't have a choice I might consider the 27". Thanks again!

you have options, also the distance from your view plays into role, way bigger screens work when you're at couch and the monitor is big TV on the wall

I use a 32” 4k monitor, it’s about the size from my experience that I think 4k is at its best.

Bigger high resolution displays are better at a distance, smaller ones are best up close. But then something like a 27” 4k display up close versus a 1440p one…. Ehhhhh, I didn’t notice enough of a change without really looking for it. 32” is right where its good at average desk depth.

As for a 4070 in 4k yeah, it’ll do that fine in the vast majority of titles. My arc A770 is a 3060ti tier card and plays most of my library at higher to max settings in 4k. If you’re going for triple digit frame rates that’s where things get hard, but most modern mid tier and higher gpus will do 4k/60 in almost anything, maybe not always at cranked settings though.

Reality of ultrawide is that not every game supports it. When you run those games in 16:9 aspect ratio, you're basically getting a 27" 1440p experience when we're talking a 34" 1440p UW. Black bars will be the norm, but that's only on the sides. Some games don't let you run proper 21:9, Overwatch 1 did that, where it would simply stretch the image. Game wasn't as nice, but the black bars on the sides weren't obnoxious enough to not play the game.

Ultrawide monitors have gotten better support over the years, but I ended up ditching it for 4K 32" after ~6 years between two different 34" 1440p UW displays. Not sure if I'll go back. I don't play the games as much if not at all where its most beneficial, being WoW and competitive FPS.

Lighter weight games you shouldn't have to. Beefier games will likely have DLSS/FSR so you also don't have to.

Can you recommend me the monitor that you have?

Also thank you for the info about the 4070. I was really worried about it not being able to handle it.

It’s a Samsung S70A, I would recommend it if you’re ok with lower brightness. It’s not a super special panel but it’s usually under $300 and it has pretty good contrast and color accuracy, which I personally value over brightness.

though you can definitely crank the brightness and it gets pretty bright but nowhere near as bright as some other options, that may be a deal breaker if you use your pc in brighter lighting conditions overall

edit:

pic in daylight the panel is at 45/100 brightness, that’s fine in daylight for me, but not everyone would think so

i have an EVGA 2070 super FTW3 ultra+ and it can handle 4k easily so i would say your 4070 will have no issues.

Depends on games, most new AAA with maximum quality setting will not able to run smoothly.

You probably need to lower down the quality setting to compensate with performance.

I am using RTX 4090 and I still would not said it is great for all 4K titles.
