Why is only part of my RAM usable?

Hi everyone,

In my build i am using two 4 GB sticks of RAM and two 8 GB sticks, both of the same brand.

Up until now i didn't have any problems, everything was fine, but today i went to check in the windows information settings and i noticed that all of a sudden it started saying "24GB installed (11,9 usable)", or something similar. I tried switching them around, only using two at a time, changing slots and everything works fine, no problems come up, but as soon as i put all for in in this order "8-4-8-4", it goes back to the 11,9 GB available. I already had this problem happen once, but i was able to fix it somehow, never actually understood how. Anyone know a solution ?

Thank you in advance.

Not all motherboards are ABAB for RAM slots (although most are). Make sure it's not AABB.

I'm not entirely sure.

The motherboard i'm currently using is a B450M DS3H.

i always had the RAM mounted in this order and it is only now giving me this problems, so i don't think it's a matter of ABAB or AABB.

When you initially installed this RAM, did you actually check to make sure you had no issues, and everything was working as you expected it to?

Yes, everything worked just fine. Everything started when I needed the two 4gb sticks for something else, which I didn't end up doing but I still had taken them out. Once back in the problem started showing up.

Did you continue to use the build in between?

In Task Manager, under Performance, then RAM...  There is a Hardware Reserved amount...

No, I was doing something that took me 30 minutes max, so I didn't use the build in the mean time.

Update:

I tried putting the two sticks back in in the order A-A-B-B, and it is now working fine. It's weird that it is because I always had them alternated and it never gave any problems, so I'm gonna guess I still won't know what the problem was. I hope I'll never get this problem again.
