pcie gen 4 vs gen 3 for gaming

ZQmSytU0TOPmjSAsWlsr

my specs:
Asus x370i strix motherboard (pcie gen 3 x16)
Ryzen 5800x3d cpu (pcie gen 4)
Sapphire Nitro + rx 7800 xt  (pcie gen 4 x16)

I have a pcie gen 3 x16 motherboard and a cpu and gpu that support gen 4. Is there any benefit to upgrading to a gen 4 motherboard? I can't find much info and what I do see isn't conclusive. Some videos that came out 2+ years ago say there's no difference between gen 3 and 4, but that advice might be outdated by now. I know the theoretical max bandwidth is lower on gen 3, but I can't really find any info on whether that matters. I also can't find a way to monitor how much pcie bandwidth I'm using at a given time to come to my own conclusions.

This video says no difference. They do some gameplay comparisons and while the gen 4 test show and improvement it's 1-5% at most. Not worth it in my opinion.

PCIe 3.0 vs PCIe 4.0 || RX 7800XT @ 16GB // PC GAMES BENCHMARK TEST ||

This video says there's a big performance jump for gpus using 8 lanes on gen 3 vs 4 (they are using a 7600 xt), but no data on a card like the 7800 xt (which is a 16 lane card). Later they say it could be bottlenecked by more demanding games in the future and they don't elaborate on that.

RX 7600 - PCIe 3 vs PCIe 4 | Does it Bottleneck? 1080P, 1440P & 4K Benchmarks

Will I get more fps with a gen 4 motherboard?

If gen 3 is not a bottleneck now, could it bottleneck games in the future?

Are there any videos, articles or reviews you can share with more info?

If it matters, I play games like Battlefield 2042 @ 1080p low, and I want to play others at 1440p high or 4k high, like Cyberpunk, Starfield, Fallout and The Witcher.

Thanks

I think it's alright for your current usage, but if you have some budget then sure get yourself a GEN4 would be nice

I'm looking for some concrete evidence. Sure, I could just buy a new motherboard, but why spend the money if there's no actual benefit.

Thanks, this is a cool article. For those that don't want to read it, it shows there's 0 difference in gaming performance.

I did find it odd though that they're using a Ryzen 7 3700X and a RX 5700 XT. This is kinda old hardware for 2023 and I wonder what the results would be if the test was repeated with a modern CPU and GPU. I recently upgraded from a Ryzen 3600 with a 7800 XT to a 5800x3d (using the same x370 motherboard) and the performance increase was astounding: double the FPS in some cases. So, yes the article says there's no performance difference, but I think it may still be outdated info because the hardware is on the older side and it's only mid-tier hardware.

Regardless, thanks for sharing the article.

If you can find a really cheap used B550/X570 motherboard it would be alright for a small upgrade, but I think holding out longer for a new system with AMD AM5 or Intel with DDR5 and PCIE 4 is the better way to go. It seems to be a much bigger gain.

I'm not much of FPS gamer, but I have the same X370 motherboard you have and also B450/X570 motherboards. I don't play many games, but can see a small difference from one game I play. I was really impressed when I saw my brother made the switch to AM5. It was a huge difference for his gaming experience.

The difference is only few percentages so I wouldn't worry about it.

No.

Gen 3 vs Gen 4 for gaming makes no actual difference at all.

yes the hardware seems kind of old but I think it will perform equally well.

On a similar situation ryzen 5600 , X6800 on B350

And cant find any comparison on pcie3x16 vs x8
