Nvidia Shield Pro vs Apple TV 4k

jeo
Go to solution Solved by DrMacintosh,

There is one main reason to get the shield. That is: You have Dolby Vision content in your Plex library.

Otherwise, I don't see a reason to not go with the Apple TV. The performance and software support is unmatched.

I am looking for advice on which device I should purchase (Nvidia Shield Pro or Apple TV 4k).

I have a modern Samsung tv and primarily use Plex and Jellyfin (occasionally I watch something on Prime).

Everything I have heard about the shield has been good, however I wonder if it will start to loss support given its age?

A clean and easy to use interface is a big plus (really hate ads on the homepage of my firestick).

Thank you!

You can't play Dolby Vision from Plex on the AppleTV 4k?!

I like smart home and home theater tech.

My 5.1 setup consists of: Sony x90cj 75" TV, Yamaha RX-V4A Receiver, Apple TV 4k gen 2, SVS SB-1000 Pro Sub, KEF Q350 L/R, KEF Q250c Center, KEF Q150 rears.

My smart home is based around Home Assistant.

You usually can (and I've never had an issue, personally), but only certain Dolby Vision profiles work in Plex on ATV (5, 8), which can be worked around (more of an issue when playing discs you've ripped yourself). You can run into weirdness with most devices with DV profiles, but because ATV is such a big fish it's a problem that presents itself more often.
