What CPU to buy for gaming

I bought an RTX 4070 for my PC and I saw that my CPU ADM Ryzen 5 3600 will bottleneck it so I thought about buying a new CPU. I have no idea what should I look for in CPU's in terms of gaming. I don't care about Photoshop and stuff like that so do I just go for the cheapest one that doesn't bottleneck the RTX 4070 or still Ryzen 9 5950X is the best because it has 16 cores? That does even matters?

What resolution will you be gaming at? Are you just purely gaming or do you need it for your workflow? What is your budget?

The best gaming CPU you can buy for your motherboard is the 5800X3D. Faster than the 5950x for gaming.

4K Resolution I have a 55' inch TV with 4K. I don't care about the budget but I don't like buying something for 500 dollars to get 2 fps more then with the CPU of 200 dollars XD

Yes, they are specifically designed for gaming as games like more cache ( X3D CPU's have more cache than normal )

A 5800X3D is the best you can get. Performance gains for at 1080 will be higher than at 1440/4K as it becomes more GPU dependent than CPU, but should be good to go with a newer GPU down the road with this CPU.

For 4K with a 4070 even a 5700X won't bottleneck.

I should have said I have my frames capped to 60, as that is what my tv does.

So 60 fps on both systems yet one gets its ass handed to it.

 

either way that just isn’t how cpu scaling works as you go up in resolution. If a game engine at 1080p does better with cache over frequency at a lower resolution, that doesn’t change when you increase the cpu load 5-10% when you go to 4k

 

especially when the you load went up 400% and is the main performance limiter

But not the testing know-how. 
Dig into your results more and explore what is going on, and why. Find out what conclusions can be made, and how generalized you can make them.

I dont doubt that you can code a single isolated example of a game engine that remains significantly CPU bound going from 1080p to 4k and converts from cache bound to frequency bound or core bound. But lets stress that is an incredibly unique situation and not something that can be generalized, or a real-world game will demonstrate. 

There are games that are not cache bound at 1080p, so remain not cache bound at 4k. but that isn't what was stated.

What is binding the CPU performance generally does not change signficantly enough between the two resolutions for them to swap positions.

OP, with zero caveates, should look at the 5800x3d for their states use case.

He would probably be better off with an X3D if all he does is plays games. But, those results are with a stock 5900X, a fully tuned 5900X is much faster than stock. The CPU can boost to over 5100MHz.
