Greetings!

Since the conception of my current pc I have been having stability issues; I have a

Ryzen 7 1700 cpu

Asus TUF Gaming B550-Pro ATX AM4 Motherboard

and CURRENTLY I have a stick of "Patriot Memory Viper Steel DDR4 32GB (1 x 32GB) 3600 MHz Module - PVS432G360C8 " off amazon for abt 60/70 American bucks at the time.

I have had issues where the computer will just let applications crash or the computer as a whole will freeze entirely, it's not an occurrence that definitively happens, meaning if I run Steam, Firefox, and Play 'whatever x game' doesn't necessarily mean it's going to happen, it's really sparatic. My wife has Patriot Memory Viper 4 Blackout Series DDR4 8GB (2 x 4GB) 3200MHz Kit, so I borrowed that for a while and had zero issues and everything was completely stable. Go figure. So I swapped my ram into her machine and her experience was also stable.

So I installed Memtest86+ on both machines, and when the 32x1 Steel is tested in my machine it *always * fails, but *NEVER* fails in hers. Her Blackout series *NEVER* fails in mine, *NOR* in hers.

What's the deal here? She's got a Asus Prime B550-A AC microATX and a Ryzen 5 4600G. Did I accidentally waste money on ram that just doesn't work in my board? Should I get something else, if so what?

Almost all my RAM related BIOS settings are set to auto. Any help is greatly appreciated. Feel free to ask any questions, I'll be checking back regularly. Just not on my PC... smh.

Return the rams and get a proper 2x16 or 2x32 kit cause single channel cripples performance

Probs just a defective module or bad xmp

Not really worried about if it 'cripples performance', when it runs it runs really well in fact. My issues is the crashing, and I don't know if that's caused by an incompatibility somewhere, and if so what that is. Again, the 32x1 Steel works fine in the second station, is stable and has no issues what-so-ever. Is there a BIOS setting I've missed? Is this an issues anyone else has run into? Is it just because of patriot ram, the motherboard, that exact combo? that's what I'm looking to have answered. Thank you for your quick response time.

Probs just the combo

Id still just return it if possible, if not just buy another kit of 2x16 or 2x32 and leave the 32gb stick in your wifes system

If the ram works(which it clearly does, it just is unstable in my system) then there's no point in getting rid of it. However, if there's something wrong with the ram / mobo combo like you're saying then I'm still left with the issue of not knowing what about the ram is causing the instability, and can't guarantee that the next module(s) will work either. If it's say, a problem where something is miss set in the BIOS or that mobo chipset doesn't like the ram speed or something, I need to know *BEFORE* I go through the hassle of getting and returning ram and blowing more money.

The solution is never throw more money at it, because that doesn't *solve* anything, it's just a 'maybe it's a bandaid' fix.

To everyone who doesn't have "idk" in your LTTf bio, what troubleshooting steps do you recommend taking? Is there another ram test program that could more specifically diagnose what the actual issue is?

@RONOTHAN##  i summon you

Ram can be quite pissy at times and for no apparent reason, looks like that particular combo just hates itself if yiur old rams work fine on your current system

Thank you for your contribution. Since ram is arbitrarily going to ‘be pissy’, I’m still looking for trouble shooting methods to see why the ram doesn’t work right. I also don’t want to end up buying more ram that is ‘pissy’ and be out the money/time for that ram.

ergo, none of my questions are answered and I am still left with the issues I started this post with:

-ram that is unstable in my machine

—without knowing why

-no idea what ram would be safe to get

—definitively anyway, because again, we don’t know why it doesn’t work

-and nobody has contributed trouble shooting methods or tools.

—aside from the good ole ‘throw money at it’ fix. Thanks.

no, you didn't understand,  the cpu will have massive issues running this ram at this speed. That's why it sometimes works... until it doesn't.

set ram to 2933mhz, or buy better ram, 2x16 kit, 3000 mhz max, make sure it's on the qvl

You really shouldn't be running a single stick of ram. That effectively halves the speed. I mean, do you want advice or not? You could even sell the stick to make back enough money to buy a proper kit. 32gb ddr4 kits are only $50 right now.

If you really insist on running crippled ram you try increasing voltage or loosening timings, but thats about all you can do, apart from perhaps reseating the cpu.
