What to upgrade too?

Hey everyone,

I've been out of the loop for the last little bit with newer generations. My current setup is:

8700k, 32gb ram,  z370 aorus eliete, 2060 Super. 850W

Things I do:
Gaming: Fornite, Warzone, Maplestory, and sometimes AAA games.

Work: Light Video/photo editing (potentially more in the future), Coding (including compiling software, data science, and ML/AI stuff).

I know I'll need to upgrade my GPU but I'm not sure if I should go the route of MOBO/CPU/RAM first or GPU first for the existing system?

The ideal budget would be around 1000-1200CAD

Would really appreciate any input!

Something not right there, you have an Intel CPU with an AMD AM4 motherboard?

How much does your work stuff use the GPU? A lot, or not much?

For gaming, a 2060 Super isn't that great nowadays (more for 1080p), so you can get a decent upgrade there, but if your work is mainly using your CPU then obviously that's not going to help.

Sorry about that, fixed it! Work stuff currently doesn't use a lot of GPU mainly CPU bound at the moment. Would getting a better GPU like a 4070 bottleneck my current setup?

Depends on the game, the resolution/settings you're using and what your purpose of the upgrade is (e.g. high refresh gaming at lower resolutions is a different story to 4k/60 fps).

Yes, i7-8700K will bottleneck something like a RTX 4070.

Even my i7-8086K @ 5.1 GHz bottlenecks my RX 6800XT to some degree.

Since your work is mainly CPU bound, might as well try to get 2 birds with 1 stone. Upgrade the CPU / Motherboard / RAM.

Upgrade the GPU later.

Okay, depends on what software / tools you use for editing, data science...

The 7900X or 7950X with the extra cores + threads may help for work, but doesn't improve much over the 7800X3D for gaming.

Based on the work you do being more CPU bound, I'd be inclined to upgrade that first. Intel stuff seems to hold its value pretty well so you should be able to sell your 8700K combo to offset a fair bit of the upgrade costs.

As for what to upgrade to, it kind of depends on what's available near you. I'm in the US near Microcenter so I see a lot of discounts on on older gen parts that would be a solid upgrade. That may not be the case near you. If you find them on sale, a 12900K or 13700k could be a good option. The new 14700K is worth looking into as well.

The AMD Ryzen 7000 series is really good across the board. I've had a 7700X and 7900X since launch and am very happy with both. If I were buying today, I'd go with the 7800X3D over the 7700X though.
