Gpu upgrade

Country: Belgium

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:  Mostly gaming

Current specs:

r5 3600x

16gb ddr4

Asus B450i ITX board

evga gtx1060 6gb ftw

Corsair cx550m

I was looking in to upgrade my gpu to an second hand rtx3080 10gb or rx6800 (xt). Wich one should I choose? Would ray tracing and DLSS make the rtx3080 the better choice?

they are around the same price range, €450-€500.

I know I need to upgrade my psu to atleast 850W I guess.

What is the current price for an Rx7800XT in your region?

In my region it's (equivalent to) €480. This would be the best deal in that price range IMO.

(800W PSU required)

In Europe we have to pay additional 20% VAT, 7800XT and 4070 are in the 600EUR range, so above OP budget

But they're good choice, perform as well if not better than a 3080, and more efficient

Something like a 7700XT or definitely a 7800XT would be a much better choice. If you're looking at the used market you could aim for a 6800XT-6900XT.

3080 for playable raytracing is bare minimum. 60fps at best. I'd say to stay away from raytracing still until two more generations at least before it matures.

The 3080 would be a better option if ray tracing is a necessity, but the 16 GB of Vram on the 6800XT means it will probably age better with newer games.

If you can speak German (or use a little Google translate), This website seems to ship in most European countries (never tested it myself though, so let me know if I'm wrong).

 - Rx 7800xt for ~€457 (price in CHF but similar to €)

 - Radeon Cards

 - RTX cards

Problem is there'll be a huge bottleneck at 1080p with the 3600x

best you could go is a 6700 xt without a bottleneck at 1080p and then get a 1000w pcie 5 psu

Why would you go with a 1000w PSU for a 6700XT? thats waaaay overkill.

I get leaving some room for future upgrades, but for a 6700XT/3600X combo a good 600W unit would be enough.  With a 750/850w there is plenty room for a future upgrade of both CPU and GPU

new price is around €570. In Europe all this stuff is more expensive than in other parts of the world.

Even the 3080 using DLSS, the 6800xt would be better? I get it in the long term with the bigger Vram yes

I get that it will be a bottleneck, but it is also kinda future proof? 1000W psu would be kinda overkill, and it would not fit since i'm still using my 'unique' corsair 380T mini itx case , so it would not fit.

no such thing, buy what you need now and then if you need something else in the future that's better, get that

450w is enough

The only really 'futureproofable' component of a pc is the psu, so i thought why not. Sure you could get an 850w or 600w

  • 4 weeks later...

So I am looking at a new gpu, currently looking at the reference 7800 xt and the asrock 7800 xt challenger. Since the max gpu length in my case is 290mm.

The difference between a 7700 xt and 7800 xt was less than €100 so the 7800 xt would be the best choice?

Would upgrade my psu to a rm850e from corsair, it is on sale for €99.

Can't really find gpu reviews for the asrock challenger and the reference card. Does anyone have one of them? Reference card looks a bit more premium and weights slightly more.

Dont go for the reference card, it runs much hotter than any equivalent spec GPU on the market, for whichever AMD GPU tier you go for.

Id opt for the sapphire Pulse or the Asrock one youve mentioned if you need sub 290mm

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL32 DDR5

Storage: 2TB SN850X, 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink, 500GB P5 Plus (OS Storage)
