Why does LTT want to make socks so badly?

flameout

How many times has Linus exclaimed that LTTStore is not like other merch, in that they don't just cash grab and only develop/sell products where they think they can improve or offer something unique compared to what's available already.

There is nothing to improve upon here, the only "issue" with Darn Tough socks is that they're expensive. LTTStore is not known for cheap/value items, it's often said to be too expensive if anything. With the alleged 2 years of R&D you've already spent on just trying to make socks, they aren't going to be targeting value for money.

It also doesn't matter how trust me bro your warranty ends up being, Darn Tough's warranty is worlds apart from anything you've ever offered or will ever offer. Just fill out an online form, get a store credit to pick any new pair of same priced socks and get them delivered with free shipping?

So, why do you wanna make socks so bad? Obviously capitalism, but I wanna hear the corporate response

Its more a meme than "reinventing the wheel" since Linus is always wearing Socks and Sandals.

I've already ripped holes in the top of both my boot socks (they come up to just below my knee) from Darn Tough just pulling them on, maybe LTT is engineering a sock top that doesn't rip when people with large calves try to pull them on :old-tongue:.

I've heard people say that they're really expensive but I've never really understood why. Are the Darn Tough socks in America different to the Darn Tough brand in Australia? They're fairly cheap here. In Australia they're $12 (US$7.50) for two pairs. Or are socks in America normally like 48c a pair at Walmart?

Yes and Yes. Darn Tough socks are often $30+ for a single pair, and regular socks... you can get them as cheap as like $17 for 15 pairs.

To go with the sandals, of course! (It's mostly for the memes.)

Yeah, for the crappy, cheap, polyester ones that don't wick moisture and pill like crazy the first time you wash them.

Good socks are worth the expense.

Luke needs some and doesn't want to pay for them.

Linus needs to keep him happy, so makes the socks.

He also wants the perfect sock for himself.

Darn Tough Vermont typically sells for $25 per pair at an REI or about $15 if you can find them on sale in other stores. The cost is mostly due to their usage of Merino Wool which is great at wicking sweat and preventing odors. I own both Smartwool and Darn Tough and they're the only socks I've ever owned that don't cause smelly feet even after a 12hr workday.

Alternatively you could get something like 12 pairs of typical cotton socks from a Walmart for $18.

You're thinking of an Australian company that's also called Darn Tough.
