You can use a Monitor as a TV but do note that TVs almost always tend to come with some amount of processing to help improve the quality of content being displayed. From reducing judder to up-scaling. There is a bunch of processing done on mid range and higher displays that really helps content look better. Lower end TVs can have rather poor quality processing, but its still there.

Monitors dont have this, so you will be seeing the raw image.

No processing for a monitor for PC use is good, you want that, both for content creation so your seeing the raw image and for low input latency for gaming.

if your ok with this, then yes for sure you can use a monitor as a TV.

Many TV's now have gaming mode that turns off a lot of that stuff.

well TVs for the most part are limited to 60hz unless you are willing to pay good money for a 4k 120hz or 144hz which yes they are getting cheaper every day but they are still around $500-1000 for a TV that you can easily see the pic from 10ft away which is still not bad but you have limits on what you can do when you use it as your PC monitor and your TV. PC monitors as far as i can tell flip this to where you get better quality of the images, faster response times but the size is limited to roughly 27-32" with some being 42" but extremely wide so not a good pic for far distances.

so far i have kind of looked into samsung and LG TVs for a replacement but only from best buy. any suggestions on a store that does shipping?

i am talking about wide vs height or how tall. a 42" TV is also about 24-30" tall. 42" PC montior is about 12" tall. so the PC monitor is very wide.

When you said very wide means it is wider than suppose standard wide.

I will not pick monitor as TV because the reason where everyone already give.

For TV, 42" is the minimum size for 4K. Common is 55" and above. Good Luck!

well like i said. a standard TV is going to be wide and tall. a PC monitor of the same "size" is mostly just wide or at least how it would appear to be. like if you placed them side by side it would be obvious which is which without guessing. right now i have kind of been looking intn the new LG LED evo models but i have no plans on getting this right now.

TV and monitor both also have 42" and 48", by placing side by side same size, it looks exactly same and the TV won't became more wide and tall because both aspect ratio is same as 16:9.

My old Hisense TV was terrible for monitor use. I was always squinting at text, my LG is much better. No more squinting. And from 1080p to 4K is a nice bump. I sit 8 feet from my screen as I type this.

i am talking about aspect ratio but physical size. a computer monitor has a physical size of whatever like 32" diagonally but usually 12" tall. a TV of 32" is typically around 24" tall. so if you placed these two side by side it would look as if the PC monitor was wider than the TV.

It is ok, it is obvious you had very little knowledge and refuse to learn.

Take for example screen size you mentioned, a 32” display be it either TV or monitor is always same in aspect ratio, that is 16:9. They is no monitor or TV in different aspect ratio for 32” in the market. When in same aspect ratio, the tall (height) won’t change.

It is ok, it is obvious you had very little knowledge and refuse to learn.

Take for example screen size you mentioned, a 32” display be it either TV or monitor is always same in aspect ratio, that is 16:9. They is no monitor or TV in different aspect ratio for 32” in the market. When in same aspect ratio, the tall (height) won’t change.

i refuse to learn? i have said if you place a PC monitor side by side with a TV the TV will physically look bigger and the PC monitor will look wider. i have NOT been talking about the aspect ratios these. just the actual size. i know you can change the ratios in the settings of the devices and its mostly 4:3 or 16:9. again i have been talking about if you take a tape measure, ruler or something to measure the size of them, the PC monitor will just look wider because it will not be as tall as the TV. these last few comments you think i have trouble understanding is because you are the one who has the wrong idea of what i mean so dont act as if i refuse to learn when you are wrong.

You can continue your monitor look wider than TV, TV look taller than monitor. Please tell this information to shop when you purchase a monitor or TV in same size 32", see what is their reaction.

4:3 aspect ratio you also can mentioned, are you from or just wake up from 1990?

I think the conflict here is due to miss-communication caused by incorrect use of terminology in regards to displays.

When one talks about size of a display as a broad generalization, it refers to 16:9 displays only.

When this is not the case, size AND ratio are used together to specify difference.

Monitors have many different aspect ratios currently available all of which have different sizes, and while there may be a specific size of monitor that only comes in 1 specific aspect ratio that is not 16:9, it is not a piece of knowledge that people have memorized. So even then it is necessary to specify both size AND aspect ratio.

So while what is quoted above is technically accurate with those 2 displays having a close size of 49" and 50", It is rarely ever an issue in common conversations as one would specifically stated when conversing that one is a 49" Monitor that is 32:9, vs a TV that is 50" and 16:9, you would state both size and aspect ratio. As such the completely different 'real world' dimension wouldn't be any cause for miss-understanding as it would go without saying due to the 2 stated specs ..size and aspect ratio.

Hope this helps clear things up.

So choose a non-ultrawide monitor to compare the tv to... Not all monitors are ultrawide.

Pro-tip.... look at both numbers when comparing the pixels. (3840 x 2160 - same on both TV and monitor)

well it could be but probably because of a translation issue becuase i said several time "the PHYSICAL size of the TV and monitor. not the aspect ratio" so it wasnt on my end the confusion happened. i even said how the TV would be taller than the monitor and gave 2 similar sized devices that show this.

i didnt. i just used 2 similar sized devices to show that one was physically taller than the other. like how the PC monitor was typically around 12" tall and the TV was 24" or more and when placing them side by side you would see the difference.

But they are not similar sized, or the same resolution or aspect ration. You are comparing a 3,840 x 2,160 (16x9) panel with a 5120 x 1440 (32x9) panel. Vastly different aspect ratios so of course the size will be different.

Look at the two that I posted. both standard 4k, the monitor is 38 inches x 23 inches. The tv is 38 inches x 22.5 inches. Functioanlly the same. ASPECT RATIO MATTERS.

i am talking about similar size in that a 42" TV is about the same as a 42" PC monitor in that you read, measure or whatever you want to call it, the size of the display by measuring diagonally from the top left to bottom right or bottom left to top right. but the PC monitor measuring from bottom to top would be around 12" give or take and the TV would be 24" or more. that is all i am saying in similar size and looking different. not the aspect ratios because i know the PC monitors have different style screens like IPS LCDs and the TVs are LED, etc. etc.. of course the IPS displays are not the only ones for PCs, i was just making an example

This tv is the same size as this monitor...

Do you know why? Aspect ratio matters. Not all screens are the same aspect ration. A 16x9 computer monitor that is a certain diagonal size (43" in this case) will be the same as a 16x9 43" tv.

Edit, and to avoid confusion, do you know what aspect ratio means? I get the feeling that you don't grasp it.

ok, i am done talking about this because everyone here seems to be stuck on "you are talking about aspect ratios" when i am not and i am getting fucking tired of being told what i am talking about when its you people who have it wrong. yes i am pissed because i dont know what could be simpler than "I AM TALKING ABOUT PHYSICAL SIZE OF THE MONITOR"

I am telling you that you need to check aspect ratios because you clearly are not. Yes of course if you put a 32x9 next to a 16x9 the outer dimensions will be different despite having the same diagonal. That's how math works. But it's stupid to do so and then complain about it. If you don't like the size being different, compare two 16x9 displays. They WILL be the same.

And yes, as I have shown you. They do make monitors that match the outer dimensions and diagonal dimensions of TV screens.

this is what i have been saying and what i am complaining about is is that i have been saying this several times now but people here are acting like. "me: if you put 2 different sized monitors side by side you will see a difference in their physical size. people here: no, the aspect ratios are the same.". i can change the aspect ratios on my 42" TV right now to be a 4:3 if i wanted to. i do not care about the ratios because you can change them to what works best for you, their max is the max they can but you can change them.

all i wanted to know from the start was can you use a PC monitor as a TV because i know it has higher refresh rates than most TVs so not only a better gaming experience but maybe TV too but this went in a whole different direction with trying to talk about aspect ratios. your main ones are 4:3 and 16:9 but with the new ultra wide monitors that is changing up things a little.

i think i will just stick with a TV when i go to replace the one i have now.
