Cisco DS-C9148-16P-K9 I just  bought are they sfp+  switches

That's an 8 gigabit Fibre Channel switch, not an Ethernet switch.

What exactly do you want to use it for?

If you want to play with high speed networking at home, you're better off with an older switch from Aruba/HPE or Brocade. Be aware that most enterprise switches are not very beginner-friendly because they're configured over a console cable (or network equivalent like Telnet or SSH), not from a friendly web UI. Converting SFP+ ports to 10GBASE-T is also cost-prohibitive; the cheapest I've seen those SFPs go for is about $40 per port. (10 gig fiber SFPs are almost literally a dime a dozen, and DACs aren't much more.) Either run an old enterprise switch and all SFP+ connections, or get a modern 10GBASE-T switch and interfaces, don't mix and match if you can help it.

There's a fair chance you won't be able to use them, unless the previous owner has licenced (!!) these ports from Cisco and has transferred said licence to you.

[snip]

You can get 10 gig fiber SFPs cheaper than that on eBay.

Again, that is not an Ethernet switch. Fibre Channel is a whole other animal.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Welcome to enterprise equipment :old-eyeroll:

The MDS licenses are attached to the switch directly via a local license file and even if deleted from the flash the ports stay licensed. The old ones (thankfully) don't use Smart licensing although today not having Smart licensing for most features only gets you syslog messages/warnings. There are voice and export controlled features which do need to use proper licensing that phones home now and again but beyond that it's honor based 😄

To OP, this is NOT an ethernet switch. You can only use this for SAN

Just didn't know if sfp+ 10Gb would work in the units. Using fiber switches between 2 locations

These will NOT work for this purpose. Please stop, you need 8Gb or 16Gb SFPs, that model switch do NOT support 10g SFP+

You can ONLY use fiber channel (aka SAN)

No, you need Fibre Channel SFPs.

Again, you mean Fibre Channel, not fiber-optic, right? That switch will not carry Ethernet.

Tell us in detail what you're trying to do first.

The last thing we want to do is tell you to just buy more random, incompatible stuff that won't do the job you want.

The switch you bought CANNOT be used for that purpose. If you can, cancel the sale or return it to sender. Again, that switch is useless for your purpose, you need a regular SFP+ switch. Microtik has decent offerings, although I've never used any of them.

As everyone is saying, you either are not communicating what you want to do correctly, or are confused and as a result of being confused, bought the wrong product.

Fiber channel is NOT for networking. You can not plug computers together via that switch.

Fiber channel is for connecting harddrives directly to servers (sort of). Fiber channel is used to connect “a box of harddrives” to  bunch of servers. The servers will then be able to utilize the drives in whatever architecture you are tryin to creat.

Think of that switch as a very fancy and complicated SATA card, for plugging harddrives directly into. You can’t plug a SATA cable between two motherboards and expect to be able to transfer data from one to the other that way, it simply does not work like that.

So like others told you, that Cisco is for Fiber Channel , not regular ethernet.  Fiber Channel is used for iSCSI, big NAS machines, it can't be used to make connections between switches.

SOME  Fiber Channel network cards can be converted to regular ethernet cards by changing the firmware (bios) on them, but that switch I don't think it can be changed.

So you need to get an ETHERNET switch with SFP+ ports or higher, but to keep prices down you want SFP+   ( you can for example get a switch with 40gbps QSFP ports and use a cable that splits the 40gbps to 4  10gbps ports, but it's more pricey).

Something reasonably cheap :  https://www.ebay.com/itm/354776368763  - 48 x 10g SFP+  and 4 x 40g QSFP ports  for $122

Here's another example, 52 10g sfp+ ports : https://www.ebay.com/itm/355009221358

If you want new, there's some 8 port 10g switches at around $300, look for netgear, microtik, qnap  on amazon

Also this TP-Link one looks nice :  Amazon.com: TP-Link TL-SX3008F | 8 Port 10G SFP+ Enterprise Level Switch | L2+ Smart Managed | Omada SDN Integrated | IPv6 | Static Routing | L2/L3/L4 QoS, IGMP & LAG | Limited Lifetime Protection : Everything Else

or ubiquity Amazon.com: Ubiquiti UniFi Switch Aggregation | Managed Layer 2 Switch with 8 SFP+ 10G Ports (USW-Aggregation) : Electronics

others

Amazon.com: MokerLink 12 Port 10Gbps SFP+ Managed Switch, Support 1G SFP and 10G SFP+, 240Gbps Bandwidth L3 Managed Fiber Switch : Electronics

Amazon.com: SODOLA 12 Port 10G SFP+ Smart Switch| L2/L3+ Smart Managed | DoS Attack Prevention | IPv6 | Static Routing | L2/L3QoS, IGMP & LAG | Limited Lifetime Protection Managed Ethernet Switch … : Electronics

What about these switches

Does Any of these have  sfp+

Brocade FCX 648 48-Port 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Switch, Front-to-Back Airflow

Brocade FastIron FCX648S Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch

Right in the name it says that it only tops out at gigabit, so no sfp+

What are you trying to do?

None of us are trying to be rude, but we really need to know what you are trying to do to be able to help. It seems as though you are trying to set something up that is outside of your comfort zone, and in order for the forum community to help you successfully do it, we really need more information. To those of us who understand networking, a lot of your questions are concerning, bordering on nonsensical… which is why we need to better understand what you are trying to do.

Take 5 minutes to clearly explain what your setup is right now, what you are trying to do, and why you are trying to do it.
