in windows display settings and games there are resolutions that do not match my monitor

I recently bought my first WQHD monitor, it's connected to my computer via DisplayPort. I'm confused about the option to set resolutions higher than my monitor supports in Windows screen settings or games. This was not the case on my previous FHD monitor. When I choose for example 3840x2160 resolution, the image becomes blurry and the monitor frequency drops to 60Hz. How can I disable unnecessary screen resolutions so that they are not available for selection neither in windows nor in games? Is it just me or everyone who has a 1440P monitor?

I'm not sure how to disable those, maybe Nvidia settings if you have that GPU,

as for resolutions, it is sometimes normal for both PC and monitor to give you a choice over different resolutions.

Sometimes you have to configure those resolutions to work, or for example I have to enable "allow resolutions not supported by monitor" to use higher resolutions and custom Hz rate.

The games should try to use your screen's resolution but some are too stupid,

again, if you have Nvidia, you can go to the Geforce Experience and set the game resolution to your monitor before you launch the game.

So I'm not the only one who has this "peculiarity" when connecting a WQHD monitor to my computer via DisplayPort? I have an Nvidia graphics card, and in the resolution settings in the Nvidia control panel under the "PC" tab, the highest resolution is 2560x1440, which is the same resolution as my monitor.  But for some reason in Windows and games there are resolutions that are much higher than my monitor supports. I don't understand why this is so, maybe it's some bug or a feature of the Asus driver... But I wish I didn't have to set my native resolution every time I play games, because it sometimes goes astray and games set themselves to 3840x2160 or lower.

When using digital cables like HDMI and DisplayPort, the resolution/refreshrate game is a three-way, not a simple two-way.

Cable matters.

Not English-speaking person, sorry, I'll make mistakes. If you're kind, maybe you'll be able to understand.

If you're really kind, you'll nicely point that out so I will learn more about write in good English.  🙂

It looks like a trend that is more common on newer displays than older ones. The only one I have that does this is my TV, which is 3840x2160 but also supports 4096x2160.

For native 1440p displays I'd guess it is for compatibility reasons. Devices may support 1080p and 2160p output for example, but not 1440p. Having the display optionally support 2160p allows it to downscale to 1440p which can be better than 1080p native for detail.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

DSR could be enabled in Nvidia's CPL. Higher resolutions than native only appear for me if I have that enabled.

I have DSR disabled and still have a resolution selection available that exceeds the standard resolution of my monitor. It's already been explained to me in previous comments that this is probably done on newer monitors to be more compatible with consoles and sources that don't support 1440p.

Are you using an older cable?

I use the DP cable that came with the monitor. The monitor has DP version 1.4. DSR works for me, I just don't use it:)

sounds like games can go beyond these settings, I tried booting up R6 and in Nvidia Control Panel, and in resolution I use custom Hz, so I changed to default 60 and in modify I unchecked box that allowes resolutions unsupported by monitor, I also have DSR disabled already, but when booting the game, the game settings display an option to go beyond 1080p, and have loaded with my before saved resolution, so with 64Hz refresh rate on 1080p, so that works but also ignores the Nvidia settings

it's fine though, only one settings visit can fix any display resolution issue, and 99% of games should save that profile so that it loads the correct resolution again

congrats for having a rich man problem.   I suggest you set a custom resolution at nvidia control panel to do only 1920X1080p.

By doing so, your games will run smoother, your eyesight can see better at desktop mode and many more.

Which is why i am never using WQHD no more. Don't forget to turn off HDR to prevent eye sore.
