water or lightning damage

It looks like water damage to me, I don't really see anything burnt. The black looks like mold to me.

Probably water and something surely shorted out on that poor PCB. If lightening was involved there would no PCB left. An intense power surge caused by lightning would at least have blown off the caps and resistors. I can see no clear evidence of that.

Looks like water damage to me. The crusty white spots left over on the PCB may be minerals left behind from the water once it evaporated and the orange spots on the case in that location looks like rust, which water accelerates the process.
