For anyone that is frustrated about the CenturyLink ISP story, as a Network Engineer for an ISP, you need to understand. These companies want as little restrictions as possible despite life saving communications and services ride their infrastructure. Transparency for the big companies is almost unheard of, and they want to keep it that way while raising your rates. What needs to change is major ISPs and internet services need to be considered a utility. They would be held to stricter standards and be forced to be transparent about rates, comply to government audits and regulations for network redundancy, and reduce costs for most Americans. That is the one thing the lobby to prevent happening. Except during the pandemic, they had to admit that they were an essential service provider. Contact your local politicians and bring them your ISP complains and concerns. Ask them to push for home internet services to be classified as a utility.

On the same topic, as a CenturyLink customer, I can attest to their customer service being awful. They are completely closed on weekends and are useless on weekdays. They refuse to replace broken equipment, and their hardware will reconfigure itself at random to run at slower speeds (I pay for gigabit internet and my modem sets itself to 100 mbps on a regular basis and I have to manually reset it for it to go back to gigabit). They refuse to help with even getting me the service I'm paying monthly for, with their reasoning being that my modem (which they provided and which I can't replace myself) is "compatible". And I'm stuck with them because they literally have a monopoly where I live.

OR.... oooor just stop creating state-sponsored monopolies. Every time I hear a story like this, the situation is always the same. The local government has awarded a single company with the keys to the kingdom. They are the only player in town and they know the public has no other choice but purchase from them.

There are two/three major ISPs available in my area. We have none of the issues and horror stories I hear about elsewhere. My internet is dirt cheap and I can count on one hand the number of outages we have had. No datacaps, arbitrary restrictions, reliability or other of the various issues I have heard of from other areas.

Stop awarding monopolies. Encourage competition and innovation. Quality, reliability, and customer care follows.
