How about something exotic, a portable Panasonic NV-8420.  It could run off battery or be plugged into the wall.  It was the recorder deck my dad used to use when he had a wedding video company ages ago.  The camera is the second photo, note that the camera doesn't have a built in recorder.  You needed both halves to make it work.

Eventually they would be combined and give us the CamCorder. Which are now obsolete too.
