I want to join the ultrawide team but...

I have a lot of doubts.

 

I have a rog Swift 27" 1440p/144hz for 8 years now and I want a decent upgrade. (34" max)

 

First thought is AW3423DWF but it’s OLED and I’ve read that it’s requieres a lot of care. 

 

I mean, I have a black desktop, I can hide the icons and the bar. I browse twitch and play games for 2-3h then I leave for another 2-3h so could enable the auto turn off screen, then play for a couple hours more. After that, I turn off the PC and the píxel refresh stuff runs while monitor is on stand by. All of that would not be a problem. That's what I understood.

 

Also, is it hard to calibrate? Do I have to enable the HDR in Win11 settings or it will auto pop up when a game can use it? Do I need to touch anything in the nvidia control panel?

 

That's my first thought, would cost 1000€ in the official website.

 

Second thought is the LG 34GP950G-B, not OLED so no worries here, worse HDR, understandable.

 

That would cost 1200€ in Amazon (third party vendor)

 

Are there better options? Tips or tricks?

 LG 34GP950G-B is actually an excellent monitor.

also just ignore the HDR as in most cases it is not worth the effort. 

I have an LG Ultra gear 34" 144hz nano ips and the HDR is just never ever used. for games not needed and for regular desktop not needed and the effort to get a tiny improvement in a movie is just too much trouble to bother with LOL

As for tricks tips etc check youtube for a calibration guide. there are some very good ones online where they go thru the basic settings one at a time and you can pause the guide and make the adjustment on the fly.

I used the one put up by Optimum Tech. but his is just one of many but I like his no nonsense and easy to follow guides.

Certain new games can set at games settings even without turn on HDR. Certain games cannot. 

 

Windows is not smart enough to auto turn on, you need manually on it by pressing Win + Alt + B keys

Going OLED and seeing HDR gaming for the first time on a display that can do it well was game changing for me. I'll never go back.

To me yes, games and movies that support HDR is spectacular vividness and pop. I will not be using any no HDR display ever.

Thanks to HDR, finally we are experiencing something different.

 

But make sure you are getting the correct HDR monitor, those entry level with DisplayHDR 400 should be avoid. 

 

The best is getting any OLED display, either WOLED in Widescreen or QD-OLED in Ultrawide or Super Ultrawide.

You will not regret getting that, as long you are not using in extreme bright outdoor.

Normal brightness condition is very ok for OLED, just not outdoor or full of windows/door environment.

I do not expect a 'plug and play' but since I have 0 idea about oled and hdr stuff, I don't want to miss any important point.

the 34GP950G-B isn't worth it (as someone who's owned one) now that dwf and 27GR95QE-B are available for cheaper. qd-oled has a higher burn in risk than woleds, i wouldn't worry about burn-in on W-oled unless it's on all day.

 

as for calibration, if it looks ok to ur eyes, then it's ok, if it looks off, nothing a slight change to the RGB and an eye test won't fix, if you do work that requires very accurate colors that's a different story.

 

The jump in image quality from ips without local dimming to oled is night and day.

Most OLED had great calibration out of the box and most monitor will disable more control of HDR adjustment.

 

Here is the review from rtings.com - Dell Alienware AW3423DWF Review - RTINGS.com

It scored 9.5/10 out of the box, nothing worries on the color accuracy.
