Need help choosing a camera.

Budget $250, must be used, with shipping to San Francisco or pickup near Bay Area.
With that out of the way, I can move on to the specifics. I have been looking at a Sony hx300 (https://m.ebay.com/itm/225550367772?_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1)

Recently, however, I found a canon rebel sl1, (https://www.ebay.com/itm/143996407040) which is appealing also.

I would like it to be slr-like in terms of shape, and to have good autofocus (at least 7 points.)

All replies are appreciated

A T5 or T6 from https://www.mpb.com should be in the low 100s,

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II is ~50$
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II in is ~60$

I'd get all these items used in good or better condition.
I'd then also grab 1-2 spare batteries and a 128gb or 265gb card.

Good luck, Have fun, Build PC, and have a last gen console for use once a year. I should answer most of the time between 9 to 3 PST

NightHawk 3.0: R7 5700x @, B550A vision D, H105, 2x32gb Oloy 3600, Sapphire RX 6700XT  Nitro+, Corsair RM750X, 500 gb 850 evo, 2tb rocket and 5tb Toshiba x300, 2x 6TB WD Black W10 all in a 750D airflow.

For the price you’re looking at you would almost universally be better off with upgrading your phone to something from the last year or two.

That canon is fine, the lens is…definitely a lens, and I don’t know what use case you’re looking for and you’ll definitely be able to get nice pictures from it, but if you’re looking to do anything with fast moving subjects that setup is going to be very difficult to get quality results with, and it will almost certainly be lower quality than what a decent phone can manage.

I get your point, and my phone camera is good, but I wanted this for the instances where I can’t have my phone on me. (Very frequent)

Fair enough, what kind of pictures are you hoping to take?  Portraits?  Landscape? Wildlife?

Just as an update, I was looking at 1. Camera (first image), 2. Battery (https://amzn.to/3q9jp7G), and 3. SD card (https://amzn.to/3QewCH4). However, I still need a lens. My only want for the lens is good zoom and good quality imagery with max zoom.

Drop down to a T6 to save money for a better lens. The 18vs 24mp is not a big deal unless you plan some crazy crops. The batteries and SD card are fine, don't forget a card reader if you need one

I've posted lots in this thread using a T5 and 60D along with my newer Fuji X-S10. The image quality out of a T5 or T6 won't be massively improved by the 24mp sensor on a T7

the jack of all master of none on EF-S is a 18-135, I wouldn't go for the 28-300 or 18-270 as they compromise far too much on image quality.

I'd pay the extra 20$ for a good vs well used lens

I like Sabrents mini USB reader its like 8$ but you need to plug it right into a USB port. the reader you grabbed looks fine
