psu lifespan

Go to solution Solved by podkall,

According to google, lifespan of 10 years is considered lucky,

what model is it?

The PSU will likely work for a while,

while it could last another 5 years if not stressed too much, you should be at least prepared if PSU one day decides to not function anymore.

The decision is up to you, you can replace it as soon as possible for not having to worry about it suddenly dying on you, or you can keep using it.

PSU failure has chance to take out other components, but that chance becomes smaller with things like OVP and other protections, that's one more thing to know if you decide to keep it.

If it aint broke, don't fix it.

Still, it depends what is hooked up to that PSU. If you have a 4090 hooked up to it, then you could probably invest in a new PSU. That's just an extreme example though.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

I've had PSUs commonly last over 30 years, but at 15, it's starting to get to where it's not unheard of for it to crap out. I would say maybe get a new one for your next build, but mostly because I'm betting 500 watts will be anemic on builds then and may not support all the different power rails you'll need. Already, there also are several new connectors and power standards that new PSUs have that yours probably doesn't. ...but if it's still running your current rig, continue to use it until you decide to move on from that machine. I imagine you'll be replacing it due to missing features and hardware incompatibility moreso than from it actually failing.

i have a 13 year old 500w psu that still works should i keep using it

Well if you wanna keep using it go ahead, id reccomend replacing it cause its already quite old, theres no real incentive not to swap the psu out cause the used market exists and gives you 50%+ discounts on psus due to rampant fearmongering cause ppl thinking psus only last 5 years

i mean go ahead look for a 750/850w gold unit on fb marketplace, youll find tons for around 50$, with the main incentive not to go for a new psu effectively nullified (price) i dont really see why youd wanna stick to that old 500w
