Intel discontinues Arc A770 16GB Limited Edition

Summary

Intel discontinues Arc A770 16GB Limited Edition, board partners will continue making their cards, however.

IT REALLY WAS A LIMITED EDITION

The title may seem like clickbait, but Intel really has officially discontinued their Arc A770 graphics card. As in, their Limited Edition, Intel-branded graphics card. The GPU is safe, and partners can (presumably) still order the GPU and make their own versions.

My thoughts

I listed mine for sale right away.  I bought it for work, but Intel did not add the necessary features to the media driver.  $350 is too rich for me, so a good time to recoup my costs.  So long, Arc!

The AIB partners can still build the card for the time being? intel have done nothing different than nvidea at this moment in time LE is what it is. Limited.

RIP, it's a nice card. Though as noted, AIBs can still make them, and I know at least Acer makes the 16GB variant, so folks can snag those if they want them. Acer's is the really neat axial/blower combo cooler too.

I'm guessing Intel originally made a fixed number of Limited Edition GPUs at the start, and this particular model just sold out.

Seems like a fair assessment.

I'm more interested in the 3rd gen ARC, if they ever get there. Hopefully they don't give up.

Are you counting DG1 a part of Arc lineup?  I have 4 of them, but I've never seen it labeled as such, it was always Xe.

You said 3rd gen Arc.  We have just Alchemist for now, which is DG2.  Battlemage, 2nd generation, is only announced.  There is no information about a 3rd generation, yet you said you're excited about it.

...as opposed to excitement about the 2nd generation.  Your comment is confusing, that's all.  So I asked if you considered DG1 a part of Arc lineage as that would give your comment some meaning, but I guess not.

3rd generation Arc would be Celestial.

First generation products always have their issues, but the problem is that the second generation product is often too far along in its development cycle by the point that the first gen product releases, so many of the issues that are uncovered during the first gen product's lifespan can't be fixed in time for the following release. As such, 3rd gen is often the time when a lot of peoples' big gripes with a product are addressed.

I actually didn't say excited. I said interested. By third gen, if they decide to keep it around, they'll have a lot of the gremlins and shortfalls sorted and performance should be greatly improved.

I do know what I'm talking about, you just lack decent reading comprehension.

Intel Arc is going as well as one could have hoped. I think Nvidia and AMD de facto abandoning the mid tier GPU segment helped a lot intel here, Arc 770 and 750 would look a lot worse if Nvidia had released a proper 250$ 4060 that performs like a 2080.

The Low tier GPU segment is already better served by CPU with on board graphics. Mid tier GPUs are going to exist because of power dissipation and memory interface, but the gap between onboard graphics and cheap discrete GPU has been closing for a while.

Intel's long game plan of having in house GPU IP for APU, Discrete GPU and discrete accelerators makes a lot of sense. Already from the 14° generation, Intel is planning to use tiles and one of the tiles is an Arc GPU. I could see Intel being able to compete as provider for the APU for a next generation console.
