Should I get the i9 14900ks when it comes out?

When the 14900ks comes out, will I be able to run it?

Im mostly concerned about the extremely high power usage and heat output that the new 14th gen cpus are expected to have. I want the binned ks version so I can potentially get lower voltage at the same clocks.

I will probably have to turn off e-cores and ht with these chips so that I can get the highest clocks and lower power/heat, but I mostly just game and do some light professional workloads so I dont need more than 8 threads.

Current specs

13700k 5.6 all core, 5ghz ring, ht and e-cores disabled

gigabyte z790 aorus elite ax

arctic liquid freezer ii 360 + thermal grizzly contact frame

2x16gb 7200 cl32 ddr5 with tuned subtimings (could go higher if 14th gen memory controllers are better)

msi rtx 4090 gaming x trio

evga 1000 t2

Will I be able to run it at 6.5ghz without thermal or power issues? Also I know it probably wont do 6.5 out of the box, but im going to tune it to get the most out of it.

14th gen would require a brand new motherboard as well.  We dont know anything about the 14900ks's performance yet.  No one can answer how well it will perform or how hot it will run... Intel doesn't even know, they are still finalizing the CPU's.

14th gen is supposed to be compatible with z790 according to rumors. Im just asking this based off the rumored specs of it.

The 14th gen will use LGA 1851 and not LGA 1700. Not compatible with old motherboards.

What you are saying conflicts with the rumors, alot of mixed information being thrown around. If thats true then I guess im getting a new board too then.

That was my plan when I built my 7700x system.  Get a 8800X3D or 9800X3D or whatever in 4 years time, upgrade my 4080 to a 6080 and keep going for another few years 😄

Its basically confirmed by now that intel will use LGA 1851. Maybe you are reading old rumors.  That's Intel for you 😄
Anyways, 14th gen is months away so no need to dabble in rumors or similar. We'll know when it comes out.

I dont know if I should get the x3d chips since they cant be overclocked which is a major downside to me. And high end intel chips are about the same performance.

That's some serious first world problems you got 😄  Jokes aside ( not really? ) You say you mainly game, just keep the 13700k for now.. you got a nice overclock on it and wait until the 14900ks releases and see if it gives you the performance increase you are after.  That's all I can say.  We dont know yet.

ehm no, the opposite got confirmed on computex, 14th gen will be raptorlake refresh on same plattform with some revamped z790 boards that already got shown on computex. And release is Q3 2023 fyi.

I think there seems to be some confusion here over what 14th gen, if you want to call it that, vs. Raptor Lake Refresh or if its the same thing. Raptor Lake Refresh will be on Z790.

It wont be. Why are you already back here with a post like this? Must you burn holes in your wallet like this constantly? Just step back and enjoy what you have, its more then enough for your system. You do not need to upgrade, it will not be a notable upgrade from what you already have. Some things may be tweaked, but i dont expect it to be a big increase.

Use what you have until it does not have the ability to keep up with the tasks you ask of it. Spending money to spend money will leave you with nothing but the longing feeling for buying the next new shiny thing to fill that void. You gotta fix that issue first, this is like a 10th of your total post count are topics like these. You already have some of the best hardware available, a refreshed cpu wont make it any better.

I always sell my old stuff so im not going through nearly as much money as it seems. I just like having the latest hardware even if I dont absolutely need it.

I may not even upgrade to 14th gen if the performance increase isnt big enough, but we dont know yet.

Its odd, as those that do that, I find myself included, don't normally need to ask others if they should buy something. Generally the answer is no from others perspective so we don't bother asking.

I'm planning on upgrading my old 9900KS to the upcoming 14900KS on the MEG Z790 ACE MAX with WiFi 7 and Cooled By EK.

Power is not an issue with my new MEG Ai1300P PCIE5 PSU.

I'll join the 14KS 6.5GHz Overclocking Club this winter hopefully 🤞

300MHz pn my 9KS max I'm expecting the same on 14KS with Intel DLVR Technology help.

Cheers

Haven’t we know for weeks RPL-Refresh is staying on LGA1700?

Yes.

Beyond that, for @rippy4500, I'm not sure it'll be worth it. Indications are that RPL-Refresh is just RPL with +200MHz and a bit more power budget.

I dont think ill see it reach 6.3ghz stable on anything but the 14900ks, I want to wait for next gen ryzen x3d(if they give them more overclocking control) or 15th/16th gen intel since it will probably make a much bigger difference than upgrading to 14th gen.
