Most powerful CPU possible for Thermalright AK90?

Jyadel

I recently came into possession of a Thermalright Assassin King 90, which looks like a slimmer version of a Noctua U9S.  Without messing with power limits or overclocking, what CPU would likely be the most powerful it could handle?  A 7700X? A 13600K?  TDP only says so much on paper.

I'd say it's not good enough for those hot chips, it's a 4 (or 5 ?) pipes basic single tower 90mm fan

They'll work, but temps will be high

System : AMD R9  7950X3D CPU/ Asus ROG STRIX X670E-E board/ 2x32GB G-Skill Trident Z Neo 6000CL30 RAM ASUS TUF Gaming AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC Edition GPU/ Phanteks P600S case /  Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 cooler (with 2xArctic P12 Max fans) /  2TB WD SN850 NVme + 2TB Crucial T500  NVme  + 4TB Toshiba X300 HDD / Corsair RM850x PSU

Alienware AW3420DW 34" 120Hz 3440x1440p monitor / Logitech G915TKL keyboard (wireless) / Logitech G PRO X Superlight mouse / Audeze Maxwell headphones

You could get a normal 7700 or 7900 non X, they are both 65w ( comes with a stock cooler as well ), I'd say they would be quite comfortable on that Assassin King 90.  The non X CPU's are only 1-5% behind the X versions at such a low TDP, they are efficiency monsters.

I wouldn't limit my CPU choices based around a $30 cooler. The slightly larger Peerless Assassin can handle any CPU you want minus maybe a power unlocked 13900k. Its $35 on Amazon.

13600k runs pretty hot. I know it's not exactly a powerhouse cooler, but I have a single fan cooler master AIO (all that'd fit my case + mobo), and it can hit 100C.
As another member said the ryzen 7000 series non-x chips might be worth looking into.
And also as another member said, I don't know if basing a CPU choice around a hyper212 competitor is a good idea lmao

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

You mean the pa120 se.  https://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-Assassin120-PA120-Aluminium-Technology/dp/B09RWVV3XZ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=Peerless+assassin&qid=1685545266&sr=8-3

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂
