I'm trying to modify an I/O shield to work with an older 990FX motherboard I'm rescuing. Literally nobody has the shield for it, including eBay, the local PC recycler (I went through 2 big boxes of shields), or even sketchy, overseas parts websites.  But I found one that is close.  Now, I need to cut just a few extra holes in the plate, but I don't want it looking like crap.  I tried an emory cutting wheel on my Dremel, but all it does is make heat, sparks and a shiny spot on the plate.  I'm thinking tin snips will look grungy.  Any better ideas?

Almost nothing will cut it cleanly, it would take a good mount of work to cut small holes and slowly open them up with sanding bits on a dremel. I would just not run an IO shield at all…

can't you jerry rig one out of 3D print, wood, plastic, cardboard, paper 😄  ?

3D design it and print it. I have done it quite few times. Check to see if you are lucky here:

Great idea, but...

Alas, it's an ASRock 990FX Fatal1ty PROFESSIONAL.  The Pro part is what kills it.  Lots of lovely I/O, but not as common as the others in the series.

Also, I live on an island and have no access to anyone with a 3D printer. 😢

double sided tape it onto a piece of hardwood, get a nice sharp chisel, and stamp it out, is all i can think of.

Oh!  Hadn't thought of chisel!  Yeah, stamping might work!  Thx!

Hadn't considered other materials.  No heat or similar issues back there?  I guess melting not a huge worry (it's an old mobo), but wouldn't want any fire risk.

Actually looking at it, it seems it is identical to this motherboard. There are also 3d printing services that you can use, this only takes like few dollars worth of material and effort (though shipping in your case might be expensive).

I/O shield don't get hot, it isn't close to any heat source..

Maybe paper is a bit flimsy 🙂 , but you can use soft wood like balsa, super easy to work, stand some heat, and can be painted

It's similar, but missing about 5 ports.  The Pro has an insane amount of I/O in the back.  What I've been trying to do is actually modify a shield like the one you're showing - just cutting out the extra ports.

Can you suggest any places you think are particularly good at 3D print work?  I could send them a digital drawing to exact scale.  (I'm near Seattle in the US)

Balsa I can do...  Brings me back to the days of model making as a kid!

Thx!
