running a 4770k on the stock cooler until I watercool. However it is crashing and the only way I can stop it crashing is to turn turbo boost off and force a max clock of 3.5 Ghz. When it crahes, It takes a while to post back up (like 2 minutes or so) and one time I had an error saying that I had an overclocking failure. I wouldn't think heat would be a problem at stock speeds but could I be wrong? Could this be a heat issue? Thanks.

Whole system: 4770k, gtx 780 sli, intel 520 series 256gb ssd, ax1200i, maximus vi formula, dominator platinum 16gb @ 1866 (2x8), corsair obsidian 900d.

What are your temperatures?

you could of messed up your cooler install...it is a peice of junk afterall.

double check it.. give it a little push and make sure the pins made it through. download and run HWMonitor to see your system temps.

Pretty sure the pins on the cooler made it through. I will upload a picture in a second. As for temps, I have AI suite 3 and I have seen them range from 83 to 88 with prime95 and heaven 4 running. I have yet to see the temps at the exact moment of a crash, however.

Dunno, does it look like the pins are all the way through? It does to me. I also replaced the thermal paste on the cooler with some arctic silver 5.

Is this with the stock thermal paste? I would recommend changing it...

Your PC will auto shut down if temps get to 90*C

if you are getting that high you should not overclock anything until you get a better cooler

I quite possibly could have been reaching that. Guess it is time to get my water-cooling components.

Yeah... So I am pretty sure that one of the pins was not in all the way... I am running prime 95 and heaven again and I am getting 10 degrees cooler on average. Been running for 10 minutes and I am at 74 instead of 84-86.

I had an issue with my 3770k with no overclock I would git 100 degrees on one core using the stock cooler. It sucked...

Watercooled and it dropped max temp by 15 degrees in the end I delidded and dropped the temps another 20 degrees. So from 100 degrees to 65 degrees under load.

Its risky, but... in my case, best choice ever.

Phhhhhh.... Still getting random shut downs. Not frequent however (every few hours or more)

Things I have done:

1: Unplugged the case reset switch (just in case it was somehow making contact). Still shutdown.

2: fixed the temperature issues. (Even at idol it is shutting down) (30 degrees C)

3: Made sure all cables were pushed in all the way to both the PSU and hardware.

4: Tried a PSU self test with all cables unplugged (which passed).

5: Tried re-sitting the RAM into the lanes.

6: Tried enabling BSOD in windows (no BSOD on shutdown)

Could this be a faulty PSU or even a faulty MOBO? I am  totally lost. What should my next step be?

When the system shuts down, the power supply continuously cycles itself on-and-off but the green light on the self test turns on meaning that it should be fine.

**I think my issues were a pile of issues and this would be the last one (heat was definetly an issue before because when it rebooted it would say that overclock failed/cpu temperature error or something like that)**

I would like to ask where you live? if you live in a hot place or with a hot room temp (mine right now is 38c with an aircon running).

I am in Canada. Ambient is like 20 right now. I really don't think it is temperatures. Idle crashing at like 35c.

hmm this is quite odd.

edit: have you tried using other stress test program besides prime95?

I generally use prime95 and some sort of gpu bench at the same time, most recently been using heaven 4 because it is a nice constant-running benchmark. What others would you suggest I try?

for your cpu try something else besides prime95 and check your temps.

I have not got a clue what's going on. At this moment, I am running prime 95, three instances of kombustor, and two instances of heaven 4 just to get things toasty but my temps are steady at a max of 76 degrees on the hottest cpu core and max 71 on hottest gpu.

Been running the tests for the last 20 minutes. No crashes yet. Last crash was 40 minutes ago while I was playing Crysis 3 and the crash before that was at idle.

Duh hell could it be?
