Sunlight on computer

I have my computer next to my window. Will the sunlight hurt my components in my computer? Im in NYC

I don't see why it would, as long as you monitor your temperatures to make sure they don't get hot enough to cause any real damage.

It's possible to change the colour of components and raise temps a bit but that's about it.

direct sunlight on a computer will mainly do two things

 

1) make the computer insides physically hotter, so long as you keep temps under control this is not enough to be a problem, but it can push some undercooled systems over the brink.

 

2) make the computer plastics fade and become brittle over years.  Ever see an old SNES or PC or such that is all greenish or yellowish or icky and the plastic has some chips out of it or pieces broken off? That's from sunlight's UV rays baking into the fire retardant additives in plastics.  It can also make paint fade over time on other parts, but this is nowhere near as severe a problem.

 

If you replace the computer parts every 4 years or so you will not really have much of a problem so long as they are cooled properly.

Higher temperatures and discolouration will not damage your PC, unless your temps get too high.

you know those modern cars. nice black plastic when new...two years later its dusty and white.

 

 

if you put a uv protective coat on your plastic when its new, it wont look worse ;P ...personally i just use furnature polish on my cases, theyre never in direct sunlight...really bad for plastic.

It will cause discolouration. Especially if you have watercooling tubes or custom painted parts

probably wont do any damage to the monitor for all that we know, if chasis is exposed the cpu/gpu/ram temp may rise , plus it advesley affect spinning hard drive which is over heated anyways (overtime). thing you need to keep away from sunlight is the UPS, Beyond that it's minor isuues like color fade (most probably wont affect unless its scorching hot 12 hours intense)
