Depends which one. A i7 970 for example is a 6c/12t but very slow so you shouldn't get that 😛

But that is basically the current recommended min spec for building a pc.

525e 13700k
316e
13500

for just a cpu, that's a bit too much for me. I would be happy to take them, but they are too expensive for me

Meant 5700 my bad

Anyway the 12400f is older and faster newer stuff can be had for the same price or a tiny bit more. So I wouldn't get it.

You can never count CPUs purely from price of the individual CPU alone especially when youre starting from scratch. Youll need the motherboard and RAM as well. The total of these parts and the CPU is what the market calls "platform cost" and is the actual cost of a CPU ownership. The reason why fhese arent covered in a lot of reviews are simple: its already bad trying to predict where the market will go for CPU let alone the motherboard and RAM as well.

But yeah, 5700X wouldnt make sense here for raw gaming, 5600 non X would be it for 12400F v AMD.

The i5 12400(F) is a reasonable option for a gaming CPU in 2023 if the price is right. If you're happy with the price, don't want to go Ryzen, and it's reasonably cheaper than the i5 13400(F) or i5 12600K, then it's fine.

The overall CPU performance of the 12400 is comparable to the Ryzen 7 3700X, which is basically equivalent to the CPUs in the latest consoles, so it will age reasonably well this console generation. The core and thread count doesn't really matter - it's about overall performance.
