Any news on 24 inch monitors that don't suck for Quake?

I only play fast paced FPS games, mostly Quake Live, and sometimes I play some Doom wads, I enjoy low input lag and high refresh rate gameplay, however, I also enjoy being able to watch a movie, or play some single player game once in a blue moon, and these experiences suck on my current monitor, ViewSonic XG2401, because the dark colors are just not there. When I look at a dark place, it's washed off, it must be the backlight or whatever the technical name for that it is, but this was the best I could find for fast paced FPS games back then.

 

What im asking now is, do we have something that is at least as good as XG2401 fast FPS wise but with improved colors, or are we still stuck in this insanity era of post-CRT monitors where you have to pick a side: either low input lag, no ghosting and high refresh rate but shitty colors, or sucking for fast paced games but good colors?

 

I remember some OLED stuff being announced but the monitors were too big and some people claimed pixels may blow up pretty fast or something.

 

So where do we stand now?

Pretty much any mid-range 27" 1440p 144Hz+ IPS monitor will deliver a significantly better experience than the TN monitor you mentioned.

 

For top-tier motion clarity you're looking at 240Hz OLED monitors, but they cost upwards of $1000.

They is many great quality monitor nowadays but you may need to consider at least 27" 1440p as not many choices for 24" 1080p. For value, go for IPS only. If you plan to invest a lot, then you may consider Mini-LED in VA/IPS with at least 1000+ local dimming zone, or OLED.

Well XG2431 240Hz is good, XG251G 360Hz too. Zowie 2566K 360Hz too, has good strobe.

27 inch is innecesarily big for me. 24 seems to be a decent sweet spot.

About IPS, I remember reading that they aren't still as good as TN for fast paced gaming like Quake. So are they finally good?

TN no longer is lead of the fastest respond time display panel. 

 

You can check from below link, The most fastest TN monitor also not in the Top 10. They is absolute no reason to choose TN nowadays.

It's a great choice if you want the best of both worlds in terms of picture quality and a smooth gaming experience, but there are also some drawbacks to it. Also, i've compared the xg2402 (couldn't find the xg2401 in rtings but im assuming it's similar) to the best IPS panel I could find at 25'' and the xg2402 has some better measurements in some areas such as:

ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM

 

Total Response Time: 8.6 ms

They is so many IPS below 6 ms but you purposely pick one over 8 ms and ask why.

 

Even new generation VA also can perform faster than your current one, for example Neo G8 where total respond time is only 6.6 ms, previously it is well known VA is very slow but now it even can beat many IPS and TN. Why don't you pick this and ask why. 

 

The LG OLED inverse ghosting is due to the matte screen surface not the tech itself. They is also not matte surface in the market if this is bothering you. They is no panel can beat OLED respond time at the moment as it is far ahead a lot.

I was looking at Quake pros monitors and seems they using TN, why is that?

Perhaps this information is outdated? I was then looking at someone with unlimited money that also has competed in FPS games like xQc, he's using this:

 

ROG Swift PG258Q

 

Which is also a TN monitor.

 

The only guy I would trust to be knowing what they are doing not using a TN panel is this guy:

Please remember if you are using IPS at dark room, you will still may facing blooming issue, bleeding issue and also black look grey. It is much much better than TN, but if you want deep black, only OLED and mini-LED VA can give you this output.

Im willing to spend in an OLED monitor, if it beats both TN and IPS in all departments, but the thing is, 27inch im not sure if it will be too big. Perhaps I could configure the games in a way that has a dark corner around the image, as seen here:

 

I already do this in QL since I started using 24inch monitors, and with an OLED, the corners would finally be full black, which is less distracting.

The best IPS monitor available is around 2 ms, which is as fast or faster than most TN monitors out there. Here is where current top-tier monitor performance sits:

Inverse ghosting (overshoot) has nothing to do with the screen coating. Inverse ghosting is when the pixel transitions past the target color and brightness and has to correct back. That being said, a bit of inverse ghosting isn't nearly as bad as normal ghosting, which just means bad pixel response times.

 

The OLED ghosting issue varies by reviewer. RTINGs for example says there is slight ghosting. Hardware Unboxed says there is no ghosting. I personally trust hardware unboxed more, but i can't make that decision for you.

Maybe you should reconsider and removed your 2nd requirement - watch movie and consider the BenQ TN monitor as BenQ Zowie series is premium TN.

 

Currently no OLED is 24" and I don't think it will appear so soon, also all is 1440p and if your GPU cannot handle, it will have big impact on performance.

I think you quota a wrong person.  You should quota the OP and let OP know, not me.

I also asking OP get the OLED but he got another thing bothering, the screen size, the OP not sure 27" is too big or not. I am not a fast paced Esports only gamer, so I cannot tell is 27" too big or not as I am using 32" for gaming and no issue, you are using 42" no issue also.
