Weird USB Hub with forking cable

reaw
Go to solution Solved by Kilrah,

This from back in the day where USB ports could not supply more than 500mA, stuff that needed more power had a 2nd plug like this to take power from 2 ports.

Nowadays pretty nuch any single port will be enough, so no point connecting the 2nd.

Hi everyone,

I habe this old Usb2 Hub that I want to reuse, and it has a weird USB cable to connect to my PC.

It basically forks into 2 USB headers (see pic), I was wondering why it was like this, should plug both to my PC? Will I get faster data transfer or is it useless?

I feel like it could be a powered usb thing. one side would be plugged into the wall and the other into the pc allowing for faster usb charging. I don't think I've ever heard of dual usb to get better speeds on a single device.

If it's for a hub then the extra cable might be for additional power. If that's the case then the second connector likely isn't even wired for data it'll just be the power wires.

As the others said, its to give additional power to the receiving device. Is the cable super long or something as it might be useful to boost the signal. But if it is only a couple meters its gonna be pointless. (plus its usb 2.0, really old).
