Voice, IM server and client

Does anyone know of a simple application that will allow voice calls over a local network. It can't be an internet based service so it will need a local server or be p2p. Spent a bit of time googling but all I seem to find are adverts or stuff that's really old and out of date.

 

Bit of background.

My users are in a completely different building across the other side of site but on the same network. We currently communicate by email but sometimes it would be easier just to have a quick conversation so I was thinking of adding some sort of client to allow voice chat?

Couple of key factors in place:

-No mobile phone available (would make life a lot easier)

-No internet connection on the network. (again would make life even easier)

-Paid or unpaid options considered

A quick Google search says Mumble might be your best choice.  Open source, server software available, free.

Seems to connect to internet to retrieve a list of pico servers but you may be able to bundle the software with your own picoserver preset or to customize the dns in your network to resolve the address of the domain from where the list of picoservers is retrieved, to redirect the request from clients to retrieve the list of servers to your own local server that will give clients only your picoserver address.

 

other ... maybe TeamTalk but not sure if it does lan servers.

 

edit : also radmin communication server seems to do what you want but may be no longer developed  / sold etc
