Translating a sentence to hex for a tattoo.

DeagleMaster

As part of a larger tattoo desing I plan on using the phrase "this too shall pass". Seeing as I am not a big fan of plain text in tattoos I tought I would translate the text to hexadecimal code. I know this can be somewhat risky and I therefore thought it best to check if I have the translation right. Does "this too shall pass" translate too "7468697320746f6f207368616c6c2070617373" and is this the correct way of showing it. Sorry if this is is posted in the wrong forum thread, but I thought someone with a bit of coding kowlage probably knew this aswell.

Yep that's correct. I'd probably opt for capitals though;-

7468697320746F6F207368616C6C2070617373

I have no basis for this suggestion apart from that it conforms with the standards that I've seen, though it's entirely personal preference.

74 68 69 73 20 74 6f 6f 20 73 68 61 6c 6c 20 70 61 73 73

20 is just a space so you can just add physical space and add a / that goes higher and lower than the rest of the text.
74686973 / 746f6f / 7368616c6c / 70617373

also 0x in front denotes that it’s hex

0x7468697320746f6f207368616c6c2070617373

there is also braille or Morse code

you want to play around with style and fonts etc before you get it set in ink.

Thats the plan. I though hex would fit seeing as I am studying comp engineering and binary would be way to long

(that was way bigger than I anticipated)

If you arrange the binary into pairs of two octets it could look good. IMO the hex is going to be hard to make it look neat. (This doesn't include spaces btw. It's "thistooshallpass")

01110100 01101000
01101001 01110011
01110100 01101111
01101111 01110011
01101000 01100001
01101100 01101100
01110000 01100001
01110011 01110011

EDIT: Also something to bear in mind is capital letters. "this too shall pass" and "This too shall pass" will translate differently.

Don't forget to add some basic error correction in the code, especially if you're going for binary. The artist might make an error.

Translating "this too shall pass" to hexadecimal code requires converting each character in the phrase to its corresponding hexadecimal representation. Hexadecimal is base-16, so each character is represented by a pair of hexadecimal digits. Here's the correct hexadecimal representation for "this too shall pass":

  • "t" is 74 in hexadecimal.
  • "h" is 68 in hexadecimal.
  • "i" is 69 in hexadecimal.
  • "s" is 73 in hexadecimal.
  • Space is represented by 20 in hexadecimal.

So, the correct hexadecimal representation for "this too shall pass" is: 7468697320746f6f207368616c6c2070617373
