Need new headphones and had DT990s previously

Senzelian

I need new headphones and I used to have Beyerdynamic DT990 Pros (250 Ohm), with which I was really happy. So obviously I'm tending towards buying them again, especially because their price is really appealing.

Now I've been looking around on Beyerdynamic's website and have seen a few other headphones and headsets that peaked my interest. The DT900 Pro X look really nice and I like the detachable cable. But I also like the look of the MMX 300, because a microphone could be rather useful in the future.

So I think what it comes down to are these two questions:

  1. Do the DT 900 Pro X sound similar or even better compared to the DT 990 Pros? I like the detachable cable and the better design of the 900, but don't want to lose the amazing sound of the 990 Pro.
  2. Is the MMX 300 comparable to Beyerdynamic's great sounding headphones or does it sacrifice too much for being a "gaming" headset? And how good is the microphone quality?

In case it matters, I do listen to a lot of Rock and Heavy Metal, but also play a lot of different games. Sometimes also multiplayer shooters which of course require an accurate and clear sound profile.

The Tygr 300r are very good and has a more controlled treble compared to the 990 pros if you think that is an option. I think they are more open but I am not sure since I haven't tried them yet. They sadly don't have a detachable cable.

I could, but I don't think I want to. They cost more than twice the amount of the DT900 Pro X and more than 3x as much as the 990 Pro. I was already very happy with the 990 Pro.

Ok, a valid argument.

Now, let me ask, which source are you connecting the headphones into?

Do you have other headphones as well, maybe some In-Ear monitors (IEM-s)?

If not, have you considered expanding your collection to have a few IEMs, some open back headphones and some closed back headphones?

I don't really want to end up with a bunch of headphones I won't use. The Pixel Buds I use for traveling, the KBEARs I use for when I go to sleep and now I really only need a solid pair of headphones for my desk 🙂

I have a Beyerdynamic DT990 Premium, and used with my iFi Micro iDSD Black Label, and the sound is just sublime. I'd just rotated it out, and using my Grado GS1000i for now. Like the GD1000i, it does have surprisingly good bass, surprising in that they're open back cans. Nice controlled bass, doesn't sound boomy like some closed back cans I've tried before.

I'm hesitant.

I like the repairabillity of Beyerdynamic's products and the lightweight construction. From looking at the 560s they seem to be a little more bulky and harder to take apart. Is that the case? It's nice that they have a detachable cable tho.

I am not sure about the harder to take apart since my familiarity with repairing Beyerdynamic headphones isn't that great.

I know that there are parts for the 560s available and that the cables use sthe same standard as the HD 598 and some others.

The 560s are also wired balanced so you can replace the cable with a one that's for balanced (2.5mm or 4.4mm jack) and use them on a balanced source.

And since you've mentioned you'd like to have a microphone, there are cables for the 560s with a microphone available on Amazon like this one

https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Boom-Microphone-Playstation-Controller/dp/B07W1G95PH/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2WFBSJ3VQUYYK&keywords=hd+598+microphone&qid=1676981500&sprefix=hd+598+microphone%2Caps%2C246&sr=8-4

Not sure if competitive gaming is one of your use cases, but the 560s are way better for that.

Edit:

You did mention multiplayer shooters. HD 560s are considered "wallhack tier" by many. Check Fresh Reviews on Youtube for example.

Also, I'd recommend getting the QKZ x HBB IEM-s for $20, not a lot of money but you might come to like them. You might even find those better for gaming than the 990pro (feels weird when you consider it's just 20-ish but the directionality, distancing and soundstage on those is quite good).

Sorry to answer some questions. No one seems to be addressing.

1. 900x is similar to the 990 in terms of sound quality they are about the same 900x has less and tighter bass easier to run better mids and less sharp treble but detail retrievable is about the same , soundstage and imaging is about the same.

2. MMX 300 is closer related to the 770 it's just a better 770 IMO. 770 has problems treble wise where the MMX 300 kinda solves that by smoothing out treble a bit

Thank you for answering my questions.

Now I think I will give the 900s a shot. Probably next month. If I don't like them I can still return them.

I made up my mind about the mic. I really don't need it that often anyway. But I might recommend the MMX to a friend if mine. He's looking for a new headset.

Beyerdynamic provides spare parts to fix your DT990. Fixing them is pretty easy but sometimes you need an extra pair of hands to apply the headband. I bought a secondhand Beyerdynamic T90 so I replaced the sliders, headband from Tygr, T90 earpads, black yokes and all works fine. If 900 is not your thing, you can always buy the DT990. Or Tygr 300R. I have this headphone too and it's a very amazing headphone too.

Funny thing, I rebought the DT770 and this time the 80 ohm version. Very good headphone too. The 250ohm is a bit strong on the highs.
