Its really not worth it only really laptops with the new thunderbolt external bays work properly, most of the external hacks do not run the card at full speed that coupled with laptops much slower processors really hinders performance, the external things are expensive too

You can still get like six times intel hd 3000 performance with hd6850, which is usually enough at laptops resolutions.

Also, nowadays laptop i7 and i5 are pretty powerfull and enough for large amount of games.

Yes it is possible using Thunderbolt. Is it practical given the price? No. Below is an example.

there been attempts from Asus called the XG station powered by the PC card bus

but only a few models are supported and the GPU was the Geforce 8600GT

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.
