Help with CPUs

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

Here is what you need for the best performance per dollar for gaming/streaming/recording/editing/rendering...the FX-8320 is just as good as the FX-8350

only lower clock speed but it's the same chip and it's unlock so a simple change of the multiplier wich takes 12 seconds really will make it just as good and

even better than the 8350 and you save $$...this motheboard is the best 970 board it has an 8+2 digital power phase with high quality heatsinked VRM's

this motherboard will allow for the craziest overclocks on this chip...and this CPU cooler is the best bang for the bucks it will allow to clock the CPU as far

as 4.6ghz 24/7 no problem, this is the exact kit i'm using for gaming and rendering and i couldn't be any happier...it games extremely well too when paired

with an high-end GPU like a GTX 770 or GTX 780 for example. The CPU cooler is 158mm tall though so make sure it fit in your case, and if you plan on

using two GPU'S (sli/cfx) you have to pick the 990FX version of this motherboard because it has only one 16x PCIe slot, the 2nd slot is running at 4x speed.

To explain,

I do...

  • video game recording,
  • video editing/rendering,
  • plan on doing live streaming via Twitch,
  • map compiling and editing for Team Fortress 2.

So my question is, which processor on both AMD and Intel would be best for all of these tasks?

Pretty much only thing limiting me is the price. I'm willing to buy a i5-4670k which at this time is $234.99 on Amazon.

Basically what I hope to get out of this is a processor that (while recording/streaming) can hold steady at 60fps, and is quick on rendering. The CPU is probably my least researched topic when it comes to building computers because when I search around, all of the topics/things I find are back from 2012.

I would like a more recent and up to date information.

Extra thanks for telling me a great, but low price motherboard to go along with each processor!

If are going to stream a lot get a 8350 but make sure to get a good motherboard with a good chipset like a 990 the ASRock 990FX Extreme3 is great for the price.

Whoops dutch link.

But I prefer the 4670k

If I were you I would add a better cpu cooler into the cost of your cpu as an overclocked cpu can increase performance significantly. Also how long are you willing to wait? because with the haswell refresh/devils canyon coming up soon, you could get a haswell cpu much cheaper.

A 4670k would be fine, if you do a lot of editing/rendering though, you might want to step up to a 4770k.

ASrock z87 extreme4 series motherboards arguably give you the best bang for your buck and I'm personally very happy with mine.

I plan on having a all-in-one liquid cooler. Probably from Cooler Master. As far as waiting, I have to sell some items in order to have money to buy all this stuff. So there honestly is no telling when I'd all these parts.

@ArchangelGabriel

With your usage scenario in mind I would actually recommend a 4770K. When streaming you will actually benefit from the Hyper threading and the same will you do when doing the other stuff you are planning to do.

If you can, get as many parts as you can into one purchase or at least close together time-wise. The last thing you want is to buy a cpu a week earlier then other parts, and the same cpu goes on sale a couple days later.

I appreciate the links, no offense to anyone else. You guys are helping me beyond what I could ask for. This is my "first" technical build with me looking for parts for my personal build. I've built computers for my friends but they already had the parts in hand.

The CM Hyper 212 caught my eye when watching YouTuber's builds but I didn't know if it would handle well with overclocking.

Which brings me to my next piece that has got me puzzled: the GPU.

Basically I've boiled it down to a EVGA GTX 660 or 760.

Obviously the 760 would be faster than the 660. But the question I have is if the extra $50 is worth it when comparing these two to my build.

As far as my build right now, it's this:

CPU: AMD 8320 or 8350 (still deciding)

CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 or CM Seidon 120V (tough choice)

Motherboard: 970

GPU: EVGA GTX 660 or 760 (still deciding)

PSU: Corsair CX Series 500 Watt

SSD: Kingston 120 GB

HDD: 1TB WD Black

RAM: HyperX 8gb 1600Mz

As far as my case, I bought it a few months ago because it wouldn't stop going out of stock, so I bought it when I had the chance. Its an Enermax iVektor. CPU cooler fits and as long as it's a ATX board, it will fit. (which the one I picked out is)

depending on what other games/ task you play/do. If they are not heavily cpu bound like MMOs and such, the 8320 is a better route on a budget, extra money for gpu horsepower.

The hyper 212 (EVO or PLUS) is enough to handle serious overclocking on these, i know it for a fact i use one myself and won't have any heat problem.

The FX-8320 will do the same job as the FX-8350 once overclocked, you could always get a 8320 that overclock beyond what many 8350 can and vice versa...so i really don't think the 8350 is worth to pay the premium

for a couple extra MHz....

The 760 is worth it over the GTX 660...you will be better served for gaming at 1080p with a stronger GPU and an FX-8320...Also for recording your gaming the 700 series from nvidia come's with shadowplay wich is the best soft to record footage as it use the power of the GPU to do it and the performance hit is like 3 fps at most...it's very nice, and you can't use that on a 600 series GPU.

As for the motherboard, you have two choice on the 970 chipset and they are the one i mentionned : Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P and the other one is the ASUS M5A97 EVO (note the EVO is important it is the one with a digital 6+2 power phase)

every other 970 board are not meant for overclocking FX 8 core chips...these too are overbuilt and very good quality motherboard and are up to such a task...the gigabyte is better it has an 8+2 power phase...

If you're stuck with a AMD card you could use the IGP to stream your game, much better overall streaming experience than a 8320 and better frames in a game. For rendering a 8320 is a bit faster but not by that much.

did you posted in the wrong thread buddy? what are you talking about...the FX does not have an IGP...anyway he's going with a GTX 760 he will have shadowplay...and for streaming the 8320 is perfect with the 8 powerfull cores

you won't feel the difference in ANY games really...there's always at least 2 core available at all time to tackle the streaming/recording or anything else running in the background...it's perfect.

And for the rendering/editing it's a BEAST ! here's the result i got this morning runing the latest cinebench i stomped the core i7-3770 (300$) with my FX-8320 that i paid 120$...

I would go with i7

Oh really?! than your dumb...you would spend like 200$ more on a CPU and 75$ more for the motherboard to go along for 10% more performance?! youre CRAZY!! Here's rendering cinebench i did this morning again

you can see i beat core i7-3770 by a good margin and i come close (10%) to the i7-4770K...there's really no need to pay a premium for an intel CPU...i paid 120$ for this CPU and 80$ for the motherboard...can you beat that for

the price? ...that's what i'm talking about!

The 4670K has a IGP. He'd have much more frames in a game with a 4670K + quicksync than a 8320 streaming off the cpu. In general a 4670k@stock will destroy a 8320@5GHz in cpu bound games. That a 8320 will be a bit faster than a 4670k in rendering fine but thats neglible that just doesnt justify the crappier performance in games than what a 4670k provides. A i5 will be overall the better choice.

He didn't mention he's going to overclock so he's overall better off with a H81+locked i5 and use that money for a better gpu.

Also that board isn't enough for overclocking as many here stated and you can't even pass prime with a 8320@4.7GHz with 1.50V under a evo 212 - there's no way youre going to keep that thing below 60°

ok youre all wrong...yes this motherboard if way good enough make your research it has an 8+2 powerphase and high quality heatsinked vrm's and mosfets its the same quality as any high-end 990fx board..now about settings, i run at 4.6 ghz with 1.4v 24/7 prime stable and my temps in games like bf4 multiplayer are hovering around 47 - 48c...no issus there.

now about performance, you should be aware that im gpu bound in EVERY games that i played so far and i have a bunch of modern games..and i use an overclocked gtx 780...ive seen many of your post in here in the past couple days and i can tell that you're a total intel fanboy and you know nothnig about cpu's, honestly you should quit immediately.

First of all; false advertisements - like a z77 mpower is advertised as a 16 phase but thats not even true at all as we can see here its just a 7+1: http://www.sinhardware.com/images/vrmlist.png

Evo 212's cant even dissipate 250-300W, seeing that your temps are barely exceeding 50° makes pretty much sense its downclocking. A 3930K@4.6GHz with 1.40V under a evo 212/nh-u12s which consumes a similar amount of power as a 8350@4.6GHz with 1.4V, the termtrip signal will be triggered and the system will shut down because it reached 90°.

now about performance, you should be aware that im gpu bound in EVERY games that i played so far and i have a bunch of modern games..and i use an overclocked gtx 780...ive seen many of your post in here in the past couple days and i can tell that you're a total intel fanboy and you know nothnig about cpu's, honestly you should quit immediately.

You are cpu limited in every massive multiplayer game. Offline games arent a challenge to be gpu bound
