5800X3D or 5900X at 3440x1440

Lazycat619

Hey y'all, I am looking to upgrade my current CPU to either the 5800X3D or the 5900X. I play games such as Hearts of Iron IV, Arma 3, Forza Horizon 5, and Ready or Not. The 5900X is $320 and the 5800X3D is $300. I play at 3440x1440 (think between 2k and 4k) preferably at 100hz.

Thanks!

5900X is not meant to be a gaming CPU, if you only game, going with 5900X is a terrible decision.

5800X3D is a gaming CPU, does much better than 5900X or 5950X, it in fact still keep up with Ryzen 7000 series and Intel 13th gen.

So, no brainer move to go with 5800X3D.

Given my current build do you think it is worth it to upgrade the CPU or is my system already GPU bound because of the resolution?

Thanks!

A new CPU would certainly help, 3600 is a slow CPU by today's standard, and 1440p UW for 6900XT should be medium work.

You'd certainly see more fps especially on games that really need a fast CPU and more cache.

Many thanks to those that responded to the original post, Many Thanks.  I'm looking at the exact same situation and your responses helped me make the decision to go with the 5800X3D.  I'm hoping that it will be a big help over my Ryzen 7 3800x.

it will be depending on the GPU you have 🙂 Did this exact upgrade and its was quite a decent jump in the games i play.

Currently have Ryzen 7 3800x, 32 Corsair Vengeance ram along with an AMD Radeon RX 6750XT video card.  The video card is only a couple of months old so I will be hanging on to that only changing out the CPU.

i mean are you sure that you even need an upgrade?  Do you not get "100hz" right now?

it just kinda seems you want to upgrade  - which is fine - but it doesn't seem like its actually necessary?

its weird how people perceive things differently,  the 3600 is actually still a very good cpu for most gpus or "for today's standards" (which is the vast majority of hardware)

And op said they want to play at 100hz... which im having real difficulties seeing how a 3600 shouldn't be able to do that.

But as i said, OP probably wants to upgrade no matter what... i get it. FOMO.
