Do I need to upgrade?

Kraz
 Share

Hi guys,

Let me start by saying I've been out of the loop for a while in terms of current gen stuff, I'll post my specs below, I just want to know how relevant my PC is, And what if any upgrades should I aim for?

CPU: I7 7770K

GPU: Zotac GTX 1080

RAM: Vengence 16GB which I think is @2400Mhz?

MB: STRIX B250G  Gaming

Storage: 2 500GB SSD / 1 M.2 500GB SSD

More context: I usually play any new game releases, I only play at 1920x1080 but aim for highest settings, I've no desire to go above 1920x1080, My main fear is new games coming out and if it will still hold up.

Any help would be great, Cheers fellas 🙂

We can't say whether you should upgrade until we know what you do with the PC.

Does it do the stuff you want it to do well enough? Then don't upgrade.

Does it not? Then upgrade.

Your "PC master race" thing is cringe.

Hey,

Added a little more context, My biggest fear is how well it will hold up against new game releases.

When the new games come out, then check.

You can always overclock your CPU and GPU to get a little more out of them.

Also, don't play on highest settings. Max/Ultra is for screenshots, not playing.  Play on High.

But from my experience, that is a very good 1080p system. I think you'll be fine for a bit longer.

Don't borrow trouble, nor pre-worry.

4-core CPU's are going to increasingly be a liability and your B250 board keeps you from overclocking it to sqeeze a little more life from it.

$200 GPU's outperform yours now.

At the moment you can probably manage 1080p/60fps in new releases at the moment but hardware requirements are starting to climb as we shed the anchor of the PS4/Xbox 1. As an example, the recommended specs for Hogwarts Legacy, one of the most anticipated AAA titles that just came out, are an i7-8700 or a Ryzen 3600 (6c/12t) and a 1080 ti just for 1080p/60.

Your "PC master race" thing is cringe.

Some new games coming out are calling for minimum spec 1070 or AMD equivalent, some say a 770 its still fine, for 1080p you should still be good to actually run newest games but as for highest setting id say no

(depending on the title of course) some games you will and some not even close but still be able to run mid low and squeeze a couple years out of it

Ryzen 5800X3D(Because who doesn't like a phat stack of cache?) GPU - XFXRXXT

This is something I was actually looking to do, Would the i7 7770k cause any bottlenecks with a 3070?

Especially at 1080p the 3070 has way more to give than the 7700 can keep up with.

damn you, using my words back at me 😛

Lol, good catch, didn't notice that board.

I disagree with the GPU though, as I bet you can drop a few things to Medium in Hogwarts to keep good 1080p/60 with that setup.  That game is going to look amazing on Low and Medium even, so cut back shadow quality or post processing a little.

I could be wrong, but screw building a new machine for Harry Potter.

And 3070 is a bad deal anyway, rather get a RX6800, it's way better at same price

Wait until you hit a point where your computer can't do something to your satisfaction. Consumer electronics are not an investment and (with rare exceptions) waiting will only save you money.

If you do decided to upgrade in the near future, I'd aim for a platform upgrade to either AM5 (Ryzen 7000 series) or LGA 1700 (Intel 12th or 13th gen) and at least a Ryzen 5/Core i5. If you want the system to last as long as your previous system, you'd probably want to go with the respective Ryzen 7 or Core i7 options.

GPUs are kinda in a weird spot right now and the prices for the higher tier models haven't entirely settled. The RX 6800 mentioned above is probably the best high-end-ish option in terms of price to performance. New GPUs in that performance tier are expected soon, though, so this recommendation could change.

like lots of people have been saying a new gpu would do well. You can go the used route too. A 6800XT is pretty good and it should be able to run any game pretty well. I would also go for a new cpu, maybe a 9th or 10th gen i7

He would have to get a new motherboard to upgrade his CPU, 7700k is the best CPU there is for the socket he has. At that point he's basically built a new PC.

I guess, but do it once at a time and go used too. That will cut costs.
