Powerline Ethernet?

Can I just ask how these work? Cause it looks as though they would work, but my guess is that one ethernet on each thingy goes to the signal carrying, which means you could have an extra Ethernet  port or more if you get another thing per one of those. Do they also talk like a proper mesh system rather than those silly ‘range extenders’ that copy the Wi-Fi’s SSID and don’t actually work?

Mesh networks work great; I have a few deployed at my parents house and business, work super well. I use nest Wifi for them, but they all work about the same. They are not at like crappy range extenders.

So basically I want good priced powerline ethernet kit that can do at least gigabit, as it would be far easier than routing Ethernet all over the house. I ask you because all the technical naming confuses me. In terms of exactly what I need, I need one plug to take signal from router into mains, 2 for Desktops and one more with 2 ports for a Nintendo switch and TV. Also it needs to be available in the UK. Thanks!

Powerline gigabit is a pipedream. Basically doesnt happen ever the moment you introduce more than 1 link everything vasically blows up

So you’re saying I can only hook up one thing then it’s all slow? What speeds could I expect then?

Power line is only meant to be a work around for basic internet connections.

Gigabit? no way. Not a chance with all those devices.

Before repurposing some older phone wiring that was already installed for ethernet what I did was run a comically long network cable all the way from the basement -where the modem is- to my room on the second floor. It's like 70 meters of cable I took from a reel and I had it routed through the stairs and hallways in a way that prevented anyone from stepping on it or tripping.

Looks don't worry me, I'm not a bimbo who gets unironically mad because of a wire running through the stairs, or a nail in a wall.

There was still a good part of it left so I basically hid it behind an armoire before it reached my PC. It worked like that for years lol, speed wasn't too much of a concern though as I only have 1Mbps internet, and the modem can only do a 10Mbps link, not the best but it was far better than trying to set up lag-fi.

Powerline is... subpar, the kind of thing that exists just because it looked good on paper and some lab tests. How good it is depends on the wiring, if it's old and has a ton of spurs and ramifications then it's going to suck, but if it's a perfect circuit made specifically with that purpose in mind then it *might* be good enough. But being realistic, no one runs wiring thinking "oh I'll make this circuit for powerline because the owners will probably use it", no, wiring is a mess, even in new constructions.

If I were you I'd go for ethernet.

Ok, so if we were to use it as a temporary fix, what speeds could I actually expect, as it is never likely multiple of those devices are on. It would normally be either nintendo switch, one computer or the other, so multiple devices in one isn’t a problem. Would I be able to get 100 Mbps consistently on one system if none others were on?

Still only 2 powerline hubs should ever be used as the moment more are in the net its a problem and a big one at that.

Basically expect like 0-50mb/s

Honestly just get a 3 pack of tp link deco m5's and use that far beter solution

It honestly depends on the model you bought and the quality of your homes electrical.

Its also super tempremental. Like a microwave running or a lamp being on could cripple or break connection even when the electrical is very recent

That's entirely dependent on the adapters you use as well as the electrical wiring in your home. Personally I've never had a very good experience with powerline network adapters. My home is less than 10 years old, and even with an ideal setup (both adapters on the same circuit) they struggled to get up to 30 Mb/s, and the speeds were very inconsistent. Across two circuits speeds were less than 1 Mb/s. Wi-Fi is a better choice in most situations if you can't run ethernet.

Personally I didn't have a good experience with powerline ethernet. At the time I was in a small UK house built in the 80's so not that ancient. The units I had weren't exactly great. Forgot exact speed but below 100M and randomly dropped out requiring a power cycle to get back.

If you're not in a massive house, a decent Wifi setup might do better.

Can I just ask how these work?
