I would pass on D15 and go straight to FC140.

D15 is not worth buying in 2023.

The current parts are equally if not more power hungry.  It's already at the limits of AM5.

Well they can't run too hot due to the extra L3 cache.

You can always run in eco mode and lose 5% in multicore full time rendering (zero gaming impact). Remember it's not the cooler that can't keep up on the 7000x series, it's stock settings are set to run up to 95C if there is any thermal headroom under heavy load. No matter what cooler you use for the most part. Basically if it under load and below 95C, bios stock setting says MORE POWER, regardless of efficiancy/speed/heat, till it hits 95C. It isn't thermal throttling at 95C (it runs above advertised speed settings still). But a better cooler gives you more thermal headroom, allowing more power, maybe giving you more speed- basically trying to overclock, but terribly inefficiant.

Using the below video as a guide and upping some of the settings a tad. My 7700X maxes out at 85, runs a few hundred mhz faster then stock and maxes out at 90w... Using a 240mm AIO.

--edit-- I forgot to add that 85 was using cinebench, an almost impossible task of max multithread use for most people... Gaming it never goes above 55 under heavy game load... most time it sits at 50 or below gaming and multitasking normal loads. And before the AMD vs Intel game begins, the new intel 13000 does same thing basically...

What negative curve offset were you able to achieve? I'm still testing my 7700X, but I've gotten through Cinebench with -23 curve offset. When I set it to 30, I got a system crash as soon as I logged into my Windows account. -25 seemed stable through Cinebench, and I left the room when there was 55 seconds left in the test. When I came back there was an error message about the program crashing, and then the system reset. It must've crashed in the last seconds of the test. I'm hitting 95C during testing, with a Noctua NH-D15 air cooler.

I'm going to run Prime95 for a while later, to see if it's really stable at -23 PBO2 offset.

This first image was my first successful run, at -20 PBO2. The second image was at -23 PBO2.

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to ask if the Noctua NH-D15  would be enough for the 7900x3d because they recommend a 280 mm AIO

Im not a fan of AIO because they die quickly

They do?  What is quickly to you?

Nope. I haven't looked into that. Should I do the curve optimizer before the PBO2 offset, and will having a PBO2 offset affect what results I get with the curve optimizer?

I also haven't capped the max temp yet. If I cap the max temp at 85C in the BIOS, will I be able to do a bigger PBO2 offset?

I don't think lowering the temp limit affects PBO, I think PBO is due to the chip makeup.

Do PBO first, then Curve Optimizer.

I started with these two gentlemen...  I can't get to 5.75GHz single core, but I was able to get 5.45GHZ all core at 83c with under 90w used.  Really happy with that performance, heat and power usage.

I turned up my system's case fans and removed the solid-panel / acoustic-treated front cover on the case, to increase airflow. After that, I successfully ran Cinebench with a PBO2 offset of -26.

2014314052_resultMC4-EXPO-PBO-26.png.75dfcb04dece2d439c7b24ee18c46e1c.png

Then I figured I'll test and set the PBO offset for each core individually, to max things as much as possible. So far, I've found the first two cores pass Cinebench at -30 offset.

The second image compares the pass with only 1st core at -30, to the pass with 1st and 2nd cores at -30 (the two-cores pass is the brighter orange one, the brown one is the pass with only 1 core set to -30). All other cores are at -22, until it's their turn to be added to the test. I got a higher score with only the first core offset by -30 than I did with the first two cores offset by -30. But I guess that's just variability of the test.

1035414095_resultMC-2CPBO-30.png.298c73f18c579aedf79166f450e33a98.png

I'll keep doing this until I find which core(s) isn't stable at -30, and then just run that or those cores lower.

I'm hitting 93C in these tests after increasing the fan speed and removing the front panel.

Awesome.  I would suggest we take this to a new thread, as this is the OP's about the 7900x3d.  Start a new thread and we (and others) can work on tweaking this thing.  I may get mine faster as well.

On my 7950x I let Ryzen master do the full test and it recommended -30.  I went into BIOS and set to -25 and haven't had any issues.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mine was stable at -30 over course of 3, 10 min cinebench tests in a row. But I backed it down to -20 just to double down on stability since I am using it as my workstation. I set the max temp at 85C and the only time I hit that is doing an actual Cinebench test. Gaming and other tests barely scratch low 60's.  I took the ECO mode settings and manually added 20-25% to the individual settings (PPT, TDC, EDC). I wasn't trying to squeeze every ounce out of it, just wanted to run at least stock performance (which I am still about 200mhz faster across all cores in Cinebench), but much lower power (in case of power outage to increase run time on UPC power, and heat for piece of mind).
