3600x running hot.

So I’m here to try and figure out why my 3600x is running so hot. I have a 120MM Corsair AIO cooler and after running cinebench I found that my temps hit a smoking 82-83.56c with fans running on turbo fan curve. My CPU idles at around 50-55c. My room temp for reference is about 20c. Boost clock hovers at around 3,950mhz. I am not running any kind of auto over clocking software on it. I got a cinebench score of 8551 multicore. I was planning to attempt undervolting but wanted to come here first.

It might just be the 120mm Aio. Reseat the cooler and see what happens. If there is no change, I would undervolt with an offset of -.055 to start, then go down by .005 until cinebench crashes or you get a blue screen.

Are both the AIO tubes hot? Or is one cold the other hot? Does the radiator get hot too?

A 120mm AIO is comparable to a low budget single tower air cooler.

Radiator is lukewarm. Both tubes are a little toasty but nothing I couldn’t hold.

Would I have to reapply thermal paste for reseat? I don’t have thermal paste on me atm. Built this PC about 3 years ago.

Can you take a photo of how your radiator is mounted? Is the fan on it pushing the air through it or drawing air through it? Last cleaned?

Every time the cooler comes off, paste has to be reapplied.

I’d say it’s been a few months since last clean. Doubt it’s a CPU seating issue unless it shifted at some point since this was my first build but it was done with a local PC technician who walked me through everything. If it is noteworthy with the panel open file dropped to 45C.

EDIT: Last dust cleaning was probably mid last year.

Temps aren't low but fine and not surprising since Prime95 is a pretty heavy stress test.

Undervolting by a 0.1v offset should be easy. Just check and see if performance isn't lower with Cinebench and go with a smaller offset if needed.

Tried this and blue screen. My CPU doesn’t seem to take ANY undervolting.

Are you otherwise using default motherboard settings? Have you tried -0.05v?

1.0 was a lockup and 1.05 was a BSD. Motherboard settings shouldn’t be configured in any way to cause issues. Just basic stuff enabled. I don’t even have performance boost there.

edit: even the minimum possible allowed underclock took but caused a cinebench crash.

1.0v and 1.05v are way too low.

Use the offset voltage setting and not static voltage.

Pretty sure ryzen master only lets you adjust peak.

The setting should be available in the bios without need for Ryzen Master.

What motherboard are you using?

for ryzen thats normal ryzen cpus run super hot

even the new 7000's they are legit specced to almost constantly hit 90c most times depending on cooler

download aida 64 and check when the temp when it is that highsee  if your thermal throttling if not

don't worry about the heat

Found it in bios. I haven’t done bios over locking in a siding Ryder master.

Tried both .05 and .1 for offset and neither worked.

that is certainly not helping your cpu and is most likely why its so hot

Did you make sure to revert to default motherboard settings before setting the offset voltage?

I did not. Although I am now square one with mobo as I had to jump CMOS. Went in and manually set DRAM speed, disabled auto tuning, and enabled PBO Lvl 2. Didn’t seem to hurt thermals and is about to finish cinebench at about the same final temperature. Haven’t tried running the offset yet but tbh think I just have bad silicone and will have to jump CMOS if I do.

PBO actually ran it slightly cooler but came out with slightly lower cinebench of 8457.

Temps being higher with PBO is normal. PBO pushes settings past stock.

Just reset back to default. At a cool 40-50 idle.

40-50 idle is still pretty warm. I’m going to point my finger at permeation. My first am4 chip was 3600XT and it idled in the 20s. Just like all of my Zen 3 chips.

I suspect it’s my case tbh, I have an NZXT case with shit airflow to the point of the tempered glass panel getting noticeably warm at times.
