I installed a PCIe to m.2 Nvme adapter with a Kingston 1tb in it.

When i started the pc there came Smoke from the pc and there where burnmarks on 3 seperat "pins" on the connection on the adapter.

My pc still smells burned but it can start.

Is it safe to use, btw i have unplugged the adapter.

if the burn is on the adapetr and not on the main board yes it is safe. Inspect everything atleast 3 time for shorts and stuff and ready to switch of the psu if anything goes wrong.

If you could post some good, clear photos of the damage, we should be able to tell you.

Unplug the adapter and make sure there isn't anything shorting pins in the PCIe slot. As long as that looks okay, it should be fine.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Motherboard looks fine.

Have you looked into the PCIe slot itself? The pins inside, whether any of them are bent irregularly or touching another one?

Seconded; if everything looks OK then ditch that adapter, something might be miswired or set up incorrectly on the PCB

A few of them are not sticking out but not connecting with each other. My other PCIe x16 1.0 (untouch) all are sticking out as they should

That doesn't sound good, let me check what the burnt pins correspond to

I just googlede that its ok to insert x4 into x16

You can also insert x1 into x16 and the other way around, it will only operate at the lowest demoninators bandwith though

Are you plugging it into a PCI slot? (the two at the bottom) If so, that is incompatible with those.

Yup, that would be REALLY bad news.

Are the PCIe 1x slots unblocked at the end so you can plug a bigger card in?

You could always cut the plastic if they aren't, but I would be REALLY careful with that

All the burnt ones are ground, there might have been some grounding issue if you plugged it into the correct port with some bent pins. Good luck if it was PCI though

Those bottom ones ARENT pcie slots but pci slots. A standard from the 90s that hasnt really appeared on most boards since around 2012.

If you plugged it in to that there is your mistake. These are ENTIRELY different things.

What exactly do you mean by that? Did you use the slots on the bottom of the board?

You might have to, but it should be fine if it's still working.

NO.

If you plugged it in to those bottom 2 slots STOP. Those are NOT pcie slots. Those are pci slots a old standard and they are NOT compatibler with eachother.

If the pc works fine leave it be. These probably just shorted and thats it. If the slots are dead its also no problem because pci is so old nothing uses it anymore

Those two bottom slots are old-school PCI. They are not PCIe! They cannot take PCIe cards! You can physically cram PCIe cards into them, but then the magic smoke escapes (as you discovered).
