Modern Games and RAM

Hi People.

i bought myself a 32gb Ram kit upgrading from 2x8 3200mhz to 2x16gb 3600mhz. I have a Ryzen 7 5800x3d and I wanted that upgrade because sometimes I and my fiancé use my pc for productivity stuff but can I expect any performance gains for gaming?

i know their have been a few LTT videos about how 16gb are still the gold standard but those videos are a bit older by now and I wanted to ask you people what you would say.

thanks for reading

Did you check to see how much RAM you're actually using before buying? How much do you use?

That decides when to upgrade.  You also could have gone another 2x8 3200MHz kit if you have a 4 slot board instead of buying 2x16. Hopefully you have a use or can sell your previous RAM.

I break 16GB often with modded games, otherwise I'd have left my previous machine at 16GB.  The new machine has 32GB due to being new, and DDR5's issues.

The only time I've needed mass amounts of RAM for a game was with giant mod packs for Minecraft Java. I've had 16GB RAM for years and it's served me well for gaming + having light tasks open.

I'm not up to date on this stuff, but I got the impression from LTT + others that Ryzen appreciates faster RAM speeds for performance, so maybe you're making your CPU load stuff (like textures+assets) faster in that regard?

TLDR For these older games I don't know if you'll experience a huge leap in performance.

16GB is standard, as others have said. I run 32GB in mine, just because I can. A Patriot PV432G320C6K kit cost me $95 from Amazon, and it works well. However, with Ryzen, I've found it's a good idea to consult the board manufacturers QVL. In a handful of situations, the wrong RAM kit can cause some pretty freaky and annoying issues. Mine drove me nuts for four months before I figured it out.

i have 32GB of 3800 CL16 (used to have 16GB) and i often see the usage go above 16GB but only in certain games. I dont know about the games that you play since i dont play any of them but a couple of the games that i play did see a small perfomance increase with 32GB, not to mention that its nice to be able to leave lots of stuff open in the background sometimes without worring about loosing performance. Basically we have reached the point where 32GB is no longer completely pointless for gaming, but its still not usually worth the upgrade for most people if all you do is game.

The main performance increase that i noticed was due to the RAM being in dual channel, dual rank which was noticably faster than dual channel, single rank that i had before. most 16GB sticks are dual rank while most 8GB sticks are single rank so you will probably also now be benifiting from dual rank. dual rank vs single rank is about the same increase in performance as 3600 CL16 vs 3200 CL16.
