Static Pressure, Airflow or balanced fans as dustfiltered intake case fans?

Go to solution Solved by BetteBalterZen,

Went for a pair of 'NF-A14 PWM chromax.black.swap's, as they were being sold in a local shop on my way home from work, hence marking this as solution to close off the thread.

Thanks to everyone for your inputs, I appreciate it. 🙂

I just bought the HYTE Y60 case, and the buttom intake fans are DC, so I need them changed out with PWM fans. The intake is dustfiltered, and there's a buttom case plate that air also needs to go through, to the internals of the case. Because of this, what type of fans should be used?

I'm finding very mixed results, therefore I made a poll to easily see what most would recommend - hoping that people will vote hehe.

It depends on how easily the dust filter lets air through. Personally I use MagLev fans which can do both. Though they seem to suck a bit of fine particles through the filters though.

I've had mixed results with airflow fans and dustfilters in the past though so, yeah. ML's for me but check out the Phanteks T30 fan. It might even be slightly better than the ML but only comes as 120mm and it's not particularly cheap.

Very good info, thank you very much @aDoomGuy

So MagLev should be good, I will see what I can find. I just need them to be 140mm. And was hoping that Noctua had any, hehe, bit of a Noctua fanboy, especially after they got the black fans. And price is no issue. I just want GOOD fans.

I get you. I like the black Noctuas myself. My NF-S12A worked fine with dust filters but still seemed a bit lazy. R5 3600x and 2060 Super in my old PC didn't require an awful lot though but at the same time that case was pretty restricted. Though again, they had a ML120 to help out. MagLevs work great. I have three ML140 in this PC. Sure if they ramp up it sounds like my PC is on it's way to the moon but at low RPM you can't even hear them so the trick is to get a good fan curve.

You're welcome!

Why ? My fans are DC and I can adjust speed similar to PWM fans, except that they ramp up when booting.

I use arctic P12 and P14 fans.

I'm willing to swim against the current.

The ones that are included with the case can only be lowered to 60% which is 1000 RPM and they are loud. So out they must go, and in I will take PWM 😛

The airflow/pressure discussion is not based on many facts.

There are as many people believing as not believing.

I personnaly don't believe it makes a difference and the better fan is always the one that pushes more air at same noise level.

(and I use Pressure fans 🙂 )

I'm willing to swim against the current.

Yeah, that to me also makes sense. But seeing people fx test SP vs AF on radiators, SP fans are better - not only 1-2 degrees, but sometimes 3-5 degrees. So there is a difference. But if it matters in a case, in my use situation, maybe not

Thanks for you input btw! 🙂

Depends. If there's obstruction such as radiator where the fan exhaust is, I will go for high static pressure fan. If there's no obstruction behind the fan, I'll go for high airflow.

Well, there's a dustfilter infront, and air also have to travel through the "floor" of the case, as marked here:

The "floor" is pretty ventilated, so maybe not that much obstructed...

Would you go SP, AF or balanced? (Edit - just saw a new vote - probably yours)

Hmm... I see. This is tricky.

For me, in this case, I will go for balance. You have the cover obstruct your fan, so high airflow fans may not be useful.

Yeah, I think a sort of balanced may be the way to go. I think either SP or Balanced.

Since I have a weakspot for Noctua, do you think the NF-A14 PWM chromax.black.swap (noctua.at) would be a good choice?

I think this is a good choice, though the price can be a little expensive depending on where you live or where you get the fan.

I doubt this,

I've seen youtubers using a sound technique, try to find out the truth, being inconclusive. The result was there's no difference.

To me Airflow/Pressure is a fancy way to say manufacturers dwell between 2 boundaries to design a fan. They either throw a little air fast or a lot of air slow.

Pressure fans usually have less blades but curvier ones. At least my Arctic "Ps" are that way.

Like a gun with a longer barrel throws bullets faster (to some extent).

The result is the same : airflow.

The Airflow/Pressure terms are smart gimmicks meant to push business.

So I think your pressure fans that faired better than airflow fans in a radiator context are also the fans with the highest airflow from scratch (or the test technique wasn't sound).

You could always prove me wrong with a link.

This is meant as a friendly discussion.

I welcome this discussion, I'm not one of those who get mad because you have a different opinion. I'm pretty sure even JayzTwoCents have tested SP fans before with better results than AF fans, but I may remember incorrectly, so maybe you're right, could very well be.

Anyhow, I saw a local shop exactly had two Noctua NF-A14 PWM Chromax Black Swap 140mm in stock on my way home from work so I saw that as a "meant to be", so I bought those, have them installed now and airflow is just fine and they much quieter than the stock HYTE fans 🙂

Ok, I just started the video, I stumbled on a first mistake : 0:24 "Same rpm". It should be same noise level or same airflow
