How to properly test NVME SSD?

Paingamesyt

Hello,

I have bought M.2 NVME SSD from chinese brand and writing speed is not as advertised. Now seller suggest me to do test while NVME is empty and for me thats strange.

Now, my question is. Do you test while drive is empty or you can test that drive while there is windows installed?

I have still buyer protection so i can recover some money but do i need to format drive and test it while its empty to prove that NVME SSD is faulty or i can test this drive while its installed windows 10?

Edit: Forgot to add

Drive is 324//476GB, its formated to NTFS.

And here is what advertising speed is and what my speed is.

You can clearly see its huge diference on writing speed

SSD drives can lose performance when filled close to their capacity. That's not the case here, so I'd call BS on that recommendation. It also shouldn't perform 10 times worse than advertised just because Windows is installed.

If possible try the disk in another machine to rule out other components as the culprit. But otherwise I'd look into returning it and buying a reputable brand.

If the drive is totally full that can pose an issue, with only a little bit on it it won't make a difference.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

what if small ssd's like 120gb are filled around 80% of their capacity? i have mine around that mark and wondering if would decrease performance though noticing nothing like that

It'll not necessarily slow so much you'll notice outside of benchmarks, it's still going to be pretty fast. SSDs have also gotten better in the sense that newer drives will include features to mitigate some of that.

I have just now requested partial refund, the NVME is working so i don't need the hassle of returning something thats cheap. It will cost more shipping to china than what this device worth :).

Anyway thanks for reply, i knew that its impossible for a drive that have windows installed to have impact in perfomanse. Even if its true what seller is saying, then read speed will also have impact.

So this is faulty by factory. I did see review that almost everyone has speed as advertised.

I love to buy chinese brand, i know they can be scammers but thank God that aliexpress have good protection so almost always aliexpress is in on side of buyer 🙂

I just saw that they're using totally different tests for their speeds than you are. They are using a queue of 32 for the first sequential read with 1 thread (no clue what that all means) and you are using a queue of 8 and 1 thread. Try adjusting your settings to theones from the screenshot of the advertised speeds. I think that might be why you're not getting the advertised speed, because you're testing it differently. Noone else noticed that so far so I thought I'd point that out to you

I'm using default settings on Crystal Mark, if they are using different options than its not my problem.
