Whats the best cpu i can put on the MacPro5,1 Firmware?

I have a MacPro4,1 running the 5,1 firmware and i was wondering whats the best cpu i can put in it?

It's probably going to be dual Xeon X5690s.

 

Dual X5675s would be half the price for most of the performance, though.

 

You're going to have to delid any replacement CPUs you want to put in that machine. It's easy enough on LGA1366 CPUs if you've got access to a vise.

 

Just remember we're talking about decade-old hardware, so temper your expectations accordingly. Low End Mac loves to go on and on about how their Mac Pros are "still perfectly usable", but even a Ryzen 5 5600 can run circles around a pair of X5690s.
